Obituary for John Edward Schimetz

John Edward Schimetz of Milford, died on June 13, 2017 in the care of his loving wife of fifty-two years, Claudia, and family. John was born on September 6, 1940 in San Francisco, California. He grew up in Calumet, Michigan, and later moved to Detroit, where he was a 1958 graduate of Mumford High School.

John served in the Army National Guard from 1964-1969. He worked at Hallmartz Glass Company in Detroit as a glazer for eight years, before switching careers to Westinghouse Elevator as a journeyman, and later, Schindler Elevator where he served as a supervisor and retired after thirty-six years with the company.

In Milford, John joined the Knights of Columbus and served as the Grand Knight of K.O.C. Council 7444. He also joined American Legion Post 216, where he became the first Vice Commander, served on the Post’s Honor Guard, and as Assistant Director of the American Legion Riders. He was a member of AmVets Post 2006, and proudly served in the Color Guard. He also volunteered countless hours to Community Sharing and many other organizations.

John enjoyed the great outdoors, camping, riding his motorcycle, golfing, fishing, hunting, and you could always find a smile on his face as he sat ocean side or lake side sipping on a cranberry and vodka.

In addition to Claudia, his beloved wife of fifty-two years, John is survived by his son, David (Rhonda) Schimetz and daughter, Jacqueline (Ralph) Pohl; grandchildren, Jennifer, Kevin, Quintin, Quaid, and Quincy; great-granddaughter, Parker as well as extended family and dear friends.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Monday, June 19, 2017 from 2-8 PM. Knights of Columbus Rosary 7 PM.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held from St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce St., Milford on Tuesday, June 20 at 11 AM with gathering to begin half an hour prior at 10:30 AM. The Rev. Msgr. John Budde to officiate. Burial and Military Honors to take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 1:00 PM.
