Obituary for Sharon Ziolkowski

Sharon Lee Ziolkowski, long time resident of Highland Township, died at home in the care of her family on June 14, 2017 after a lengthy illness. She was 64 years old.

Born on March 9, 1953 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Victor and Marie (nee Rahanian) Buranskas, Sharon grew up in Allen Park where she was a graduate of Allen Park High School. Following high school she graduated from Eastern Michigan University where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Business. She went on to work in Material Planning and Logistics in the areas of Order Scheduling and Vehicle Logistics for Ford Motor Company for over thirty-nine years. She retired in 2013.

She met Duane Ziolkowski while playing women’s softball on a team that he helped to coach. They fell in love, and married on July 20, 1985 at St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church in Allen Park. They made their home in Allen Park, before settling in Highland in 1986.

In ninth grade Sharon's parents bought her a quarter horse named Uncle Jim Mac—it was the beginning of her passion for horses and riding. She would go on to ride competitively in reining events for over thirty four years and was a member of the National Reining Horse Association and the Michigan Reining Horse Association, with which she served on the Board and enjoyed many dear friendships.
In addition to horses, she was a champion for all animals and helped nurture and rescue many cats and beloved dogs over the years.

Sharon also enjoyed managing an antique booth with her niece Kelly in the Livingston Antique Mall, opportunities to see Reba McEntire perform, and outings with her sisters to procure Polish pottery. She was an amazing aunt to her nieces and nephews for whom she organized a yearly Horse Camp to further their education, special Easter egg hunts, and every year hosted Thanksgiving Day dinner for ALL of her family.

A gathering will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Friday, June 23, from 2-8PM with a Rosary at 7PM. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford, on Saturday, June 24, at 11AM.
Memorials may be made in her name to Best Friends Animal Society at BestFriends.org.
