Obituary for Alice "Gerry" Sharpy

Alice Geraldine “Gerry” (nee. Evans) Sharpy, a former longtime resident of Dearborn Heights and Livonia, died peacefully at home in Milford on December 30, 2018 surrounded by her family and loyal companion, Raggs. She was 90 years old.

Born March 3, 1928 in Melvindale, Michigan, Gerry was the only child of Zebadee and Ida (nee. Fletcher) Evans. Due to hard times during the Great Depression her family was forced to move around a lot, she remembered having attended 28 different schools in her lifetime. Gerry lied about her age so she could get a job and help the family. She worked a variety of jobs, but her favorite was being a mom to her six children (Sherill, Brian, Camille, Rebecca, Darlene and Deborah).

Gerry met Carmen Sharpy while working as a beautician and he was a barber at the adjoining shop. The couple married in Bowling Green, Ohio on December 18, 1948. Eventually Carmen and Gerry purchased a home in Dearborn Heights where they raised their six children. Their 6 children blessed them with 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Following the death of Carmen in 2002, Gerry moved in with her daughter Rebecca and her family. The family moved to Milford, Michigan in February 2004, where she lived out the rest of her life.

Gerry loved animals and children, always wanting them near. Her hobbies included hiking trails, playing in the parks with the children, going to the lake, shopping and gardening. Pink roses and carnations were her favorite flowers, however, we never heard or saw a flower that she did not like and call a favorite.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carmen J. Sharpy in 2002 and her grandson, Craig VanOosten in 2017. She is survived by her children, Sherry VanOosten, Brian Sharpy, Camille (Jack) Anspach, Rebecca (Michael) Uribe, Darlene (Floyd) Minor, Deborah (Ronald) Clements; as well as twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, many extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St, Milford on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 2-8 PM.

A Funeral Service will be from First United Methodist Church, 1200 Atlantic St, Milford on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 11 AM, with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Pastor Doug McMunn officiating. Burial Mt Hope Cemetery, Livonia.
