Allan Johnson, a long time resident of Commerce Township, died in the care of his family at Courtyard Manor in Farmington Hills on Sunday, July 19, 2015, after a long struggle with Alzheimers Disease. He was 86 years old.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, on May 26, 1929, he was the son of Thomas and Nancy (Taylor) Johnson. He fell in love with Jacqueline Ruth McShane and the couple were married on September 11, 1954 at St. Leos Catholic Church in Detroit. They raised their children and were members of St. Genevieve Parish in Livonia, St. Williams Parish in Walled Lake and St. Marys Parish in Milford. A man of abiding faith, he associated his own suffering with the suffering of Christ and lived in hope, surrounded by the love of his family.
As a young husband and father, he took work as a pipe-fitters apprentice, gradually learning to quote jobs, working with Zeni and Maguire from the mid 50s until 1972 when he bought an interest in Interlakes Plumbing and Heating. In 1975, he and a partner bought Kropf Mechanical which closed in 1980, after which Allan opened and operated his own business, Johnson Mechanical, until he retired in 2003.
Allan Johnson always pitched in to do his part for family and friends and fellow contractors, serving The Metropolitan Detroit Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors Association for many years in 1988 as a director, in 1991 as an officer, from 1992-1996 as the President of the association and PHI Trustee from 1992-1998. He was a proud member of Pipefitters Local 636 for sixty years. Strong, generous and always willing, he was known as Uncle Al, the kiddies pal. He was an A1 Father to his kids, and an A1 Husband to his beloved Jackie, his wife of over sixty years. In addition to Jackie, he is survived by their daughters and sons, Maureen (Paul) Ridley-Gribbell, Michael (Karen) Johnson, Bernard Johnson and Kathleen (Jeffrey) Goldman; also 9 grandchildren, one great-grandson, a sister Kathleen Gray and brother, Richard (Christine) Johnson as well as many extended family members and a host of friends who join with his family in mourning the death of a dear man and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday, July 23, from 5-9PM and on Friday, July 24, from 2-9PM with a Scripture Service at 7:30PM.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce Rd., Milford, on Saturday, July 25, at 11AM with the Rev. Msgr. John Budde officiating.
