Obituary for Allen "Butch" Graydon Freer

Allen Graydon Freer, a resident of Brighton, MI, died with his family close by his side in the morning hours of Sunday, December 8, 2019. He was 69 years old.

Allen “Butch” Graydon Freer was born in Trenton, MI on September 5, 1950 to parents, Gerald and Ruby Freer. He had a natural ability to understand how things work and loved fixing things or doing projects for people. He had a love of cars, including his favorite 1968 red Ford Mustang. He graduated from Melvindale High School, class of 1968 and soon after enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a proud serviceman and was stationed in the Florida Keys where he worked with nuclear weaponry and had a side job training dolphins.

In December of 1971, Butch met the young Sally Lynn Irwin, of Redford. After a whirlwind courtship of two weeks, the couple married on December 22, 1971 at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church. It was a love built to last, as they enjoyed nearly 48 years of marriage and raised their two sons, Jason and Jim. In 2000, they relocated to Brighton, MI where they have resided for the last 20 years.

Butch went into the trades and was a loyal member of the UAW where he provided 30 years of outstanding service as a millwright to Ford Motor Company. His career taught him many skills and he was the go-to family member if you ever needed anything fixed or worked on. His attention to detail was noticed by all and he was meticulous in nature whether he was cleaning a garage or working on a large project.

A true joy in Butch & Sally’s lives was watching their grandchildren grow – Nicholas, 19; Maxwell, 17; Tyler, 13; and Jacob, 10. They attended countless school performances and sporting events, becoming a part of the sports families.

Butch enjoyed traveling, visiting destinations such as Tahiti, Jamaica, Greece, Mexico, Egypt, Hawaii, and Alaska (4 times) to name a few. He was a talented wood worker and has made his family members all sorts of treasured items. Allen also liked solving crossword puzzles, playing pinochle, taking photos, snorkeling and was a gifted pool player.

Most of all, Butch loved his family. He cherished the time spent with all of them and he will be forever missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sally; sons, Allen Jason (Debbie) Freer and James Michael (Julie) Freer; grandchildren, Nick, Max, Tyler and Jacob; his brother, Buddy (Barb) Freer and his sister, Judi (Don) Giroux.

Butch is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Ruby (nee. Akers) Freer and his sister, Jerri McDonnell.
