Andrew Smith, a resident of Hartland, died Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was 89 years old. Born and raised in Pineville, Kentucky, Andrew was one of eight children born to Silas and Bertha (nee Green) Smith. The Smiths were a traditional southern family and Andrew carried with him the strong, faithful, American values his parents instilled in all their children. He went on to marry his childhood sweetheart, Mary Maggie Denny, and together they raised nine children of their own passing on the importance of God and Country, family and home cooking. Andrew also knew the value of a hard days work, and after 30 years on the line at General Motors he retired to an easier pace working in his garden. To say he enjoyed gardening would be an understatement; he loved to grow vegetables, eat what he grew and often said if he could die in his garden, hed be a happy man. He was a good hunter, enjoyed his guns and could spend countless hours fishing, but some of his happiest times were spent picking his guitar. Whether it was playing Gospel, Blue Grass or Country Music, Andrews smile and the light in his eyes let you know he was having fun.
Andrew Smith was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Maggie (d. 2004). He is survived by their children, Zella Hackett, Gwen Vernier, Ann Glenn, Eddie (Carolyn) Smith, Vern Smith, Merle (Juanita) Smith, Freida (Craig) Eicholtz, Carolyn Steiner and Cathy (Jeff ) Teggerdine; 24 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, William (Mary Ellen) Smith, Albert (Sally) Smith, Sophie Coletrain and by many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Funeral from Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Saturday 11 AM, Pastor John Vannest will officiate. Friends may visit on Friday from 2-8 PM. Memorials may be made to Heritage Hills Church. For further information phone 248.684.6645.
