Obituary for Barbara Ann Mirling

Barbara Ann Mirling, a resident of Commerce Township, Michigan since 1992, passed away on October 28, 2008 at Huron Valley Hospital after a battle with cancer. She was 60 years old. Born on June 29, 1948, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Barb grew up in Grand Rapids and Ferrysburg, Michigan, and was a graduate of Grand Haven High School. Following high school she worked in Grand Haven at the Win Shuler restaurant, and it was in Grand Haven that she would meet Gary Mirling, whose U.S. Coast Guard ship was stationed there. They fell in love and married on October 12, 1968 in Grand Haven. They remained in Grand Haven for a couple years during Garys service and then moved to Detroit where they raised their family and lived until 1992. As their children grew, Barb began working at Gompers Elementary School while her kids were going through the school and enjoyed working in the cafeteria, as a teachers aide, and in later years worked in the schools office.
Barbs pride and joy was her 1967 Airstream trailer---and her favorite place---Croton, Michigan where she had been going with her parents since the 1960s, and where her and Gary have enjoyed their Airstream since 1982. She loved being on the water, and most of all enjoyed being with people while sitting around a campfire in Croton or in her backyard at home. She also loved antiquing, knitting and crocheting afghans and blankets for her family, and took great care in decorating for the holidays, particularly her Christmas tree which was adorned with a new ornament every year for each of her children. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by many dear friends who join her family in mourning her passing and celebrating her life among them.

In addition to Gary, her beloved husband of over 40 years, she is survived by her sons, Gary (Jennie) Mirling, Jr. of Capac, Andy (MaryMargaret) Mirling of Lexington, Michael Mirling of Wixom; daughter, Tracy (David) Herman of Waterford; grandchildren, Brandon, Jeramie, Kevin, Cameron, Tyler, Rachael, Kaitlin, & Noah Mirling, and Matthew & Mckenna Herman; sister, Judy (Ep) Betke; brother, Ronald (Sue) Silvers; step-father, Russ Knol and sister-in-law, Doris Mirling. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy (Kukawski) Knol.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Saturday, November 1st, at 11AM, with Pastor Gary L. Miller officiating. Friends may visit Thursday 6-9PM and Friday 12-9PM. Memorials may be made in her name to Karmanos Cancer Institute. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
