Obituary for Barbara Dawn Bergin

Barbara Dawn Bergin, a lifetime resident of Milford, died of complications of leukemia at University of Michigan Hospital, surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 22, 2012. She was 79 years old. Born in Pontiac on July 10, 1932, she was the daughter of Donald and Minnie (Dedrick) Doig. Soon after graduation from High School she went to work at the G.M. Proving Grounds where she met Raymond Bergin and fell in love. They were married on May 21, 1955 and Barb stayed home to raise their three children. When the kids were teenagers, Barb returned to school, taking classes at Cleary College and University of Michigan where she studied mathematics. She worked with Mott Media and in the office of U.S. Representative Bill Broomfield and later took a job with a travel agency, possibly as an excuse to travel with Ray. They took trips to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and elsewhere.

A woman of deep faith, she was an active member of Milford Presbyterian Church for over sixty years, serving as an Elder and the church choir.

Though she worked all her life in various jobs, Barbaras true calling was to the service of others, not only through her family and church but throughout the community. She was a volunteer at Huron Valley Sinai Hospital since its opening and served as president of the volunteer organization there and later on the State Board of Hospital Auxiliaries. She served as Chairperson of the Committee of Volunteers for the American Hospital Association, one of 18 people selected nationally to serve on the U.S. Committee of Volunteers. Her lifelong service to others -- her family, her church community and the community at large -- was how Barb lived out her faith and values.

In addition to Raymond, her beloved husband of nearly 57 years, she is survived by her children, Kelly (Arun) Mandagere, Don (Karen) Bergin, Patrick (Patricia) Bergin; grandchildren, Kevin, Angie, Jill, Allison, Sean and Matthew as well as many extended family and friends who join with Barbs family in mourning her death and giving thanks to God for her life among them.

Funeral Service will be held from Milford Presbyterian Church, 238 N. Main St., Milford on Thursday at 10 AM. The Rev. Anne Schaefer will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Johns Cemetery in Hartland. Friends may visit Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Wednesday 3-9 PM. Memorials are encouraged to the Milford Presbyterian Church.
