Obituary for Barbara Hayes Haggerty

Barbara Hayes Haggerty, 89, beloved wife of the late Gordon for 61 years, passed away on October 2, 2021.

Barbara was born on November 29, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of four children of Celestine and Mary Genord. She grew up in Birmingham, Michigan and graduated from St. Anthony High School in Detroit. She worked at J.L. Hudson downtown Detroit as a secretary before marrying Gordon Haggerty on October 17, 1953. They were high school sweethearts. They lived in Livonia, Michigan as a couple before moving to Milford, Michigan in 1972. They were blessed with six children. They were married 61 years before Gordon’s passing in 2015.

In her free time, she was a great cook, especially her homemade lasagna, loved to sew, enjoyed crafting, and shopping. With her love of crafting, at one point in the mid 1970’s, she even owned Highland Fabrics in Highland. She always found time to have dinner on the table for the family. She never sat down. Always doing something, Barb even found time to knit baby hats to give out to parents and families at Huron Valley Hospital, where she volunteered her time at the gift shop. Barb and Gordon wintered in New Smyrna, Florida after Gordon retired, where her family has many great memories of getting together to visit. She even led a workout and aerobic class in Florida that kept her active.

Loving mother of Karen DeVine (Larry), Colleen Marano (Nick), Kim Foley (John), Krys Brish (Stan), Carolyn Okmin (Mike), and the late Kevin Haggerty. Devoted grandmother of Kelly Seebaldt (Mike), Tracy Bradley (Dom), Stephanie Cahill(Robbie), Christopher DeVine, Tera Kulpa (Phil), John Marano, Gina Marano, Marli Marano, Jessica Foley (fiancé Mike Nerhus), Carly Bedingfield (Drew), Samantha Brish, CJ Brish, Nick Brish, Emily Johnston (Jordan), Conor Okmin, Eric Okmin, and Cole Okmin. Proud great-grandmother of Olivia Seebaldt, Madi Seebaldt, Michael Seebaldt, Rosie Kulpa, Emma Kulpa, Evelynn Cahill, Juke Cahill, Finley Bedingfield, Gordon Bedingfield and Oskar Nerhus. Dear sister of the late Joan Connolly, the late Shirley Cockerill, and the late Jean Kramer.

Barbara’s family would like to share their appreciation and thanks to the entire staff at Courtyard Manor in Howell, as well as the staff of Careline Hospice who were instrumental in the care that Barbara received during her time at Courtyard Manor. Their compassion, patience, kindness, respect and love will never be forgotten by her family.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 26, 2021 at 2:00pm at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 404 E. Liberty St. in Milford. Visitation begins at the funeral home at 1:00pm.
The memorial service will be live-streamed, and can be viewed from this obituary site at the time of service.
