Barbara A. Placco (Gosmarino) -
After a long illness Barbara left this life to be reunited in heaven with her family on March 19th, 2022.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Victor and Rose M. (Dattellic) Gosmarino; husband, John M Placco (1947-1996) and stepson, James Placco (1969-1988).
Barbara is survived by her loving son, Michael V. Placco; devoted grandson John.M. Placco and brother in law, Anthony Placco.
A very proud New Yorker and Italian American, she was born in Bushwick ,Brooklyn on June 14th, 1943 and later raised in Corona, Queens, New York.
She graduated from Newtown High School in 1960, later attending college as a non-traditional student earning an associates degree in 2006.
Thanks to her mechanic dad she enjoyed her teenage years being a woman hot-rodder in Queens. She had varied and exciting careers early on working for Pan-American Airlines and later General Dynamics's Electric Boat Division - these two jobs allowed her to travel to and see many exciting places and events across the 1960s.
Later while working for IBM in Manhattan she met her future husband, John marrying in 1975 - and years after that having their only son, Michael. She and John would enjoy over 20 years of marriage before his passing in 1996. She remained very active during her long widowhood.
Barbara and her family moved to Michigan settling in Milford where she worked for the Huron Valley YMCA in its early years and in turn eventually becoming a long time Senior Administrative Assistant at Providence Hospital in Southfield from where she would later retire.
In her last years she would take joy seeing her son fulfill his lifelong dream to work in Higher Education. Her most special times however were spent watching her beloved only grandson - named after her late husband.- be born and grow into a teenager. She was a devoted grandmother being a good "sport" going with him to ballgames and to water parks.
She was life long New York baseball fan who also cheered on her son's alma mater, Bowling Green. Over her life she adopted many rescue cats taking care of all of them giving them long wonderful lives in a loving home.
