Obituary for Benniett John Crocker

Benniett John Crocker, a longtime resident of Plymouth and Detroit, and a recent resident of Saginaw, passed away in the loving care of his family from the challenges of congestive heart failure and Alzheimer’s disease on May 23, 2018.

Born July 15, 1926 in Saginaw, Michigan, Ben was one of two sons born to parents Benniett H. and Viola B. (nee. Musser) Crocker. Ben and his brother, Keith were raised in the Saginaw community.

While at Olivet Nazarene College, Ben met Phyllis. The two courted, fell in love and were married on December 28, in 1951. Ben later graduated from the University of Michigan.  They were blessed by the births of their children Dennis, Lori and Curtis. Together, they raised their family in the Detroit area while Ben dedicated his 45-year career as an accountant to the General Motors Co.  Ben deeply loved his church and served as Treasurer of the Detroit First Church of the Nazarene (now Hill Top Church)  for over 30 years.  He also served as Treasurer of the Christian Education Association for several decades. Ben was a man of many talents and he cherished music—he was a member of the navy choir while he served our country and actively participated in the choir of every church he attended. Together Ben and Phyllis were part of the Tenacious Ten—a group of 5, fun-loving couples who would travel on  self-guided adventures. Phyllis became ill from ovarian cancer, and was cared for lovingly by her family for two challenging years. She passed away in 1997.

After Phyllis’ passing, Ben reconnected with a high school classmate, Barbara. The two had known each other from class reunion activities—and after each of them was widowed, they formed a bond and soon after were married. Barbara and Ben lived in Farmington for a time and later made their home back in Saginaw and have been married now for 19 years.

Ben was preceded in death by Phyllis, his beloved wife of 47 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Benniett H. and Viola B. (nee. Musser) Crocker and brother, Keith Crocker.

In addition to Barbara Crocker, his loving wife of the last 19 years, Ben is survived by his children, Dennis (Jeannie) Crocker, Lori (Mike) Vollmer, and Curtis (Virginia Abbott) Crocker; grandchildren, Nichole (Ted) Jenkins, DJ (Elizabeth) Crocker, Tori Crocker, Matt Vollmer, Mitchell (Anna) Crocker, Molly Crocker, Burke Abbott, and Ellie Abbott; great-grandchildren, Lorelei, Sabina, Charlie, and Sadie. Ben will be missed by everyone who knew him.
