Betty L. Gates, 92, of Milford, MI, died peacefully on April 10, 2021.
Betty was born in Detroit, MI, and graduated from Cooley High School. She married George, the “smart, handsome boy” who lived a few blocks up Pinehurst Street. They moved to Milford in 1957 and settled down on Squire Lane to raise their three children surrounded by lifelong friends and neighbors.
Betty was devoted to her family, but she didn’t let them get away with anything. She modeled a life of honesty, generosity, and kindness. She was an active volunteer in the community. Throughout the years, Betty served as a Girl Scout leader, election poll worker, Historical Society docent, PTA member and playground monitor, American Red Cross blood bank worker, and March of Dimes fundraiser. She loved to play cards and was a fierce competitor at pinochle club gatherings she enjoyed with her friends. Betty’s hands were never idle—she knitted, croqueted, embroidered, and painted. Her handmade Christmas stockings, ceramic villages, and tree ornaments decorate the homes of her family and friends, not to mention her afghans, doilies, and dishcloths.
Betty was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, George W. Gates, and her sister, Margaret Bowman. Betty is survived by her children, Victoria (Art) Lofton, of Huntington Beach, CA; George Gates, Jr., of Highland, MI; Nancy (Ron) Pearson, of Barcelona, Spain; her granddaughter, Marylynne (Patrick) Burch, of Tempe, AZ, her great-grandson, Aiden Burch; and her brother, Victor (Kathy) Runstadtler, of Brighton, MI.
A visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home in Milford, MI, from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm on Friday, April 16, followed immediately by a funeral service.
