Obituary for Betty Mae Rhodes

Betty Mae Rhodes, a resident of Highland Township since 1959, died on November 15, 2017 at the age of 92. Her health had been failing since suffering a stroke in July.

Betty was born on September 26, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois, the sole child of Herbert Clausen and Meta Nielsen Clausen. Betty met Dean A. “Doc” Rhodes after being struck by the presence of his deep voice from behind a wall in the next room. They would fall in love and were married on May 13, 1952. They began their family and in 1959 made Highland Township their home. They joined the fellowship and practiced their faith with Cedar Crest Lutheran Church in White Lake, where Betty held many offices over the years, and where they schooled and raised their children in the Christian faith, something they made a priority.

Betty and her husband opened the Rhodeside Veterinary Hospital on Milford Road in Highland, where she helped as receptionist for many years and operated a pet store inside the clinic. Growing up next to the practice, their children’s education was shaped as they grew up learning to work with animals, work in the hospital, and in their deep-rooted participation in 4H.

Betty loved animals, travel, and her children and grandchildren dearly. For twenty years, she and Doc made their yearly pilgrimage to Zephyr Hills, Florida for the winter. The trip to and from Florida in their motor home or camper, with her beloved cats, included many days and weeks as they always including camping adventures throughout the United States on their long, winding travel to and from Florida. She also deeply enjoyed opportunities to travel with grandchildren and family.

She was proud of her Danish heritage, loved musicals and theatre, and in recent years as her hearing failed, engulfed herself in her love of reading. She read nearly a novel a day, and was a regular at the Highland Township Library, where she has checked out thousands of titles, and logged her favorite authors and books read on the cards she kept.

She was a woman of quiet, abiding faith and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean A. “Doc” Rhodes D.V.M. in 2005 and is survived by her sons, Rev. Daniel Scott Rhodes and Dean C. (Jacqueline) Rhodes; her daughter, Sine (William) Chittenden; grandchildren,Nisse (William) Mead, Vincent (Jessica) Rhodes, Deana Rhodes and Jason Rhodes; great grandchildren, Thea and Thora Rhodes, Kaia and Hadley Mead; her Morton family in Minnesota, many other extended family members, dear friends, and her beloved cats, Gala, Juno, Barney Button and Lucky 7.
