Beulah M. Bertouille, a native Detroiter and long-time resident of Dearborn, died on Friday, May 15, 2009 in the care of Odyssey Hospice and her family at Sunrise Assisted Living in Plymouth, after a long illness. She was 84 years old. Born in Detroit on January 28, 1925, she was the youngest of four daughters of Dr. Clinton and Rome (Therrien) Brake. She graduated from Fordson High School in Dearborn where, among her classmates was Desire Bud Bertouille who had joined the Navy and gone off to serve in World War II. After graduation Beulah went to work in a local dime store. She and her sisters frequently attended dances for returning G.I.s, at one of which she began her courtship with Bud Bertouille. The couple was married in 1947. They raised their family in Dearborn and once the children were grown, Beulah went to work as a stocks and bonds clerk with Ford Motor.
Family was the passion of Beulahs life. She loved cooking for them Sunday dinners and holidays. Summers were spent camping at Camp Dearborn in Milford. Bud, who was an engineer with Ford at the Wixom Plant, would commute between work and weekends with the family in their camper trailer. At home, Beulah enjoyed working in the yard, raking leaves, taking care of the lawn, and sweeping the walks. Bud and Beulah continued their travels, across the country, to Alaska to visit her sister, through Europe and Japan, enjoying his retirement and hers. She is preceded in death by her husband and her sisters, Florence LaGuire and Angeline Brake.
She is survived by her son, Desire Bud (Pam) Bertouille, Jr. of Dearborn and by her daughter, Renee (Neill) DeVries of Milford Twp. Also surviving are granddaughters, Jennifer (Mark)Taylor, Heather Runyon, Holly Bertouille and Dr. Lindsay (Michael) Occhipinti, DVM, a grandson, Pieter DeVries and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Dylan, Taylor, Mikki and Ally. Her sister Roma Hogue survives as do many nieces and nephews, neighbors and friends who join with her family in mourning her death and giving thanks to God for her life among them.
