Obituary for Bill Wright

William Lorne Wright was born at home, in South Lyon, Michigan on October 18, 1928, one of four children to Lester and Ila (nee. Burkholder) Wright. At the age of 17, Bill enlisted with the United States Marines and served for three years at the end of WWII. Later, he earned a high school diploma and an Associate Degree in Engineering at Schoolcraft College and proudly worked for General Motors (Overseas Operation) for twenty three years, working his way up from mechanic to safety engineer before his retirement in 1984 at the age of 55.

Bill met the young Joan Lee at his mother’s house. The couple quickly fell in love, were married on February 24, 1951 at the Redford Presbyterian Church and made their home in Redford. Bill made family a priority. He maintained close friendships with his siblings, he was a loyal husband for nearly sixty seven years and a dedicated father to three. He took his duties at work, at play and as the family patriarch seriously— he was hardworking, focused, professional and a perfectionist. He was a talented mechanic and woodworker, often showing his love and gratitude for family by fixing and creating pieces for them. The family home in Redford was furnished with all of his creations, including a full kitchen set, the children’s cribs, playpens and bed sets. In addition to his family and woodworking, Bill enjoyed his ’77 Cadillac, which he called “Old Red”. In 1984, following his retirement from GM, Bill and Joan moved to Greenbush, Michigan, on Lake Huron. Northern Michigan suited Bill well, he was most at home on the beach, shirtless, where he began each day with a swim and a walk on the beach.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 67 years, Joan Wright; his daughters, Christine Jarvis and Barbara Lee (Buddy) Morris; his son, Kenneth William (Irene) Wright; grandchildren, Adam Jarvis, Aimee (Michael) Letvin, Ryan (Liz) Morris, Jake (Katie) Wright, Lee Wright; great-grandchildren, Ashton and Dane Jarvis, Eliza Letvin, Clare and Jay Morris; siblings, Bob (Sue) Wright, Marilyn (Ed) Peckham and Jerry (Sue) Wright, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 12:30 PM with visitation beginning at 10 AM. Bill’s grandson, Lee Wright, to officiate. Burial to follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to Arbor Hospice.
