Obituary for Carl J. Kern

Carl J. Kern, a resident of Highland Township, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 11, 2011 after a brief battle with brain cancer. He was 69 years old.

Born in Frankfort, Michigan on August 25, 1941, Carl was the son of Carl, Sr. & Effie Kern. He grew up in Highland Township, attending Milford High School before beginning his longtime career with Numatics Incorporated in Highland where he worked as an Inspector. In 1961 he married Mary Lee Dillow, the love of his life. Mr. & Mrs. Kern were soon blessed with the births of their twin daughters, Deborah and Diana and remained in Highland to raise their family. After forty-two years of work with Numatics, Carl retired in 2004.

Carl loved the outdoors. When he wasnt hunting or fishing or simply out for a stroll to take in natures scenery, he was planning tomorrows next excursion. He planned several trips to Canada and was especially happy with opportunities that brought his friends, and fellow sportsmen, together. He knew the lakes surrounding local areas like the back of his hand and rarely came home without a stringer of Perch or an impressive Walleye. As a younger man, Carl enjoyed working on cars and seemed to reserve particular attention and care for 55 Chevys. Beyond his tough exterior, Carl was a man of great compassion, quick to put the needs of others before his own. His good heart and kind nature earned him no enemies... because if you knew Carl, it was hard not to love him.

In addition to his beloved wife, Mary and their daughters, Deborah and Diana Kern, Carl is survived by his mother, Effie ODell Kern; sisters, Mary Lou (Lester) Slocum, Mary (Jerry) Riley, Marion (the late Joe) Gladkowski; sister-in-law, Chris (wife of Carls late brother, Victor) Kern; numerous nieces and nephews, many loving friends and his pets, Lola and Ali.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl, Sr..

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Wednesday, June 15 at 11AM with Rev. Galen Lowery and Rev. Andy Gibson officiating. Burial Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit on Tuesday, 3-8PM. Memorials encouraged to the Humane Society of Huron Valley For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
