each stage of the grieving process.
Carol Bastas, 82 of Davisburg, MI passed away on October 8, 2021 at the residence that she and her husband had built to enjoy their golden years. She was lovingly surrounded by her husband and children.
Carol was born on December 23, 1939 in Detroit, MI. She was the 6th of 7 children of Dr. Joseph Roy Barton and Julia Moran Barton. She grew up in Detroit where she attended St. Mary’s of Redford school for 12 years. There she met her group of lifelong friends, nicknamed the Bells of St. Mary ‘s. She maintained a tight bond with her “Bells” after all those years. One of her favorite traditions that she held dear was hosting an annual Christmas party for the “Bells” and their husbands.
One day back in 1955 when she was 15 she headed to Basher’s Drugs with a few “Bells” after school where she met the love of her life, James Bastas. They married in 1960. They went on to raise 4 children. Carol spent many years as a homemaker. She was very adept at sewing, crocheting and knitting. She was very well know for her baking skills, especially her incredible array of Christmas cookies that so many people looked forward to receive during the holiday season.
In 1979 Carol went to work at Bogie Lake Golf Club as a waitress. She was loved by most, especially those that referred to her as Carla from Cheers. Carol made many lifetime friends with those she worked with and those who were customers. The good times ended in 2003 when Bogie Lake Golf Club closed.
Carol also owned her own business the Book Nook, a used bookstore that was in operation for many years located in the same building as her husband Jim’s barber shop. She spent her remaining years enjoying puttering in her garden, baking and surfing the net. She also enjoyed monthly lunches with Jim, Ann Shimmin her sister in law, and old family friends Kay and Tim Flynn. She looked forward to Christmas when she spent days beautifully decorating their log home for the holidays.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, James Bastas, children Jim Bastas, Julie (Kalani) Poaha and Paul Bastas, daughter in law Michele Bastas, grandchildren Christopher (Libby) Bastas, Paige (Joe) Hanley, Trevor Connolly, Cara Connolly, Joe Bastas and Sophia Bastas; She is also survived by her sister Delia (Ken) Rightmier, sister in law Ann Shimmin plus many loving nieces and nephews.
Carol was predeceased by her beloved son David Bastas along with her parents Dr. Joseph Roy and Julia Barton. Her sisters Patricia (John) Downs, Mary (Gerald) Durak, Margaret (Gabriel) Michel and Germaine Merriman along with her brother Joseph (Joanne) Barton.
