Obituary for Charles James "Chuck" Dierkes, Sr.

Charles James “Chuck” Dierkes, Sr. (aka “Carlos” or “Chuckie”) a long-time resident of Milford, died on September 7, 2019, surrounded by his loving family. He was 84 years old.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Charles Dierkes, step-mother, Pauline Dierkes, mother, Hazel Kubitz, and a daughter, Robyn in 2014.

Chuck is survived by Karen, his loving wife of thirty-eight years; his children, Cheryl (James) Lathrop, Wendy (Roy) Groover, Chuck (Beth) Dierkes, Jr., Christopher (Bree) Dierkes, and Karly (Cory) Williamson; grandchildren, Ian and Brendan Lathrop, Justin Dierkes, Joshua and Jordan Groover, Jaclyn and Charlie Dierkes, Addison Dierkes, McKenna Daggett and Baby Girl Williamson on the way; siblings, Helen (Nick) Hoffmann, Terry Kubitz, and Maria Carson; in-laws, Jim and Patty Voelker, Cathy Beck, Gary (Donna) Beck, and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends who join his family in both mourning his passing and giving thanks to God for his life among them.

Chuck was born on February 4, 1935 in Mascoutah, Illinois and grew up in St. Louis.  He began his career in the tire industry as a mail boy with U.S. Rubber, and worked his way up to a Vice President position with Uniroyal Tire.  In 1979 he retired from Uniroyal, and started his own tire company, the Gillette Peerless Tire Group, which he successfully operated until 1997 when he retired.

Outside of work, Chuck loved boating with his family and friends and could fill a captain’s log of his adventures on Michigan’s Great Lakes. He also enjoyed hunting, food of any sort, and staying up to speed on the latest and greatest technologies.  He was always the first to try the latest television or phone release, or new gadget or backyard grill, as his curious, inquisitive self just needed to try them out. His home in Milford was one of his greatest comforts, where he gardened, and spent endless hours tending to its serene and natural setting. One of his greatest pleasures was teaching each of his children (and later grandchildren) how to drive his tractor. He professed to each of his grandchildren that they were “his best helper,” which went a long way in getting their aid to tend to his home, a ploy that they all still laugh about today.

Chuck will always be remembered for the way he could chat his way through a room of people, for his quick wit and great sense of humor. His embellished stories were told with such a straight face they often left his listeners curious to Google his choice of facts! Chuck’s jovial disposition was a treat for everyone.  He was engaging and colorful with a large personality. For his family, he was a great husband, father, and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce St., Milford, on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 11AM, with visitation beginning at the church at 10AM. A luncheon will follow at the Prestwick Village Clubhouse in Highland.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Angela Hospice.
