Obituary for Charles S. Toy

Charles S. Toy, a long time resident of Milford, died on January 3, 2013 at the age of 92.

He was one of five children born to Arthur and Hazel (nee Carr) Toy in St. Petersburg, PA. Charles attended Clarion High School, earned a B. A. degree from Grove City College in 1942, and later received his Law Degree from Wayne University.

Charles served in the U. S. Navy as a pilot, flying off of carriers during WWII. His love for flying continued during his civilian life as he was the owner of a Cessna that he kept at Brighton Airport, and from where he would occasionally fly to various destinations that included Traverse City for dinner.

Charles began his career as an attorney for the City of Detroit with offices in the Penobscot Building. He later opened his own practice in Milford and served as an attorney in the Milford and Hartland area for many years, during which time he provided legal services for many area township offices, including Brighton, Deerfield, Hartland and Milford. He retired from his legal career in 1978.

He married Carol Cece in Angola, Indiana on July 30, 1993. Charles and his family enjoyed many trips together, including a special pilgrimage to Portage Point, where they spent a week in cottages there for twelve consecutive years.

An eccentric man of many talents, in his retirement he enjoyed purchasing various pieces of heavy equipment including a backhoe, a tree spade, a saw mill, a Jeep with which to pull logs, and a bulldozer, all of which helped him in his projects and his building of log homes and the making of his pond. Charles was willing to tackle any project on his own and only ask for help later.

Charles had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed sharing a joke with friends and family. A caring, supportive and compassionate man, he will be sorely missed by everyone whose life he touched.

He is survived by his wife Carol (nee Cece); daughters, Cheryl (Todd) Cruttenden, Cece (Frank) West, Cathy (Pat) Ehgotz, Christine (Curt) Collins; son, Mark (Nu) Ehgotz, eleven grandchildren and a great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, on Monday, January 7, at 10AM with the Rev. Fr. Leo Lulko officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Sunday, January 6, 2-8PM. Memorials may be made in his name to Western Oakland Meals on Wheels.
