Obituary for Christian Borg Brakke

Christian Borg Brakke, 77, died March 21, 2012 at home in Madison, AL with family by his side. Born March 30,1934 in Farmington MI, beloved Chris is survived by his wife Kimberly Ann Brakke, sons Christian Eric and Eric John Brakke (Mary), grandchildren Katherine, Kyle, Eric, and Zack, sisters Elsie Garner & June Strang. He is preceded in death by sisters Astrid Hancock and Josie Swartz.

Chris worked hard in youth farming, marketing, and construction and was an only son of first generation Norwegian immigrants. His humble beginnings under the watchful tutelage of his entrepreneurial father helped him develop a keen business sense and strong work ethic; and Chris became widely respected in the MI and AL construction communities. Ultimately, Chris was an accomplished land developer, licensed builder, and specialty contractor giving him a platform to teach, mentor, and encourage many younger trades and business people throughout his long career.
Whilst Chris was a successful entrepreneur with pointed determination, he always displayed a witty sense of humor, zest for living and genuine interest in learning and knowing people. Some might describe Chris as a "colorful character" in dress and personality; but all agree that his sense of style, charisma, and warmth left everyone better for knowing Chris Brakke.
In early adulthood, Chris was proud to serve in the United States Army ('56-'59) and he participated in the fraternal order of Freemasonry in Grand Rapids MI before relocating to AL. A lover of the Michigan's Great Lakes and boating, Chris fostered a love for both as well as other active hobbies with his two sons. Most of all, Chris loved his role as grandfather to four amazing kids.
Chris enjoyed an active lifestyle in retirement with great friends, interesting travel, and a passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles and antique cars. A steadfast supporter of his family, his word was his bond, and Chris consistently lead by example. Chris was frequently known to energetically lend a hand/muscle, financial, or emotional support as needed. Chris was respected by acquaintances but loved deeply by those in his personal circle.

Funeral Services will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Michigan, on Sunday, March 25, at 1PM with the Rev. Anne Schaeffer officiating. Friends may visit on Saturday, March 24, 2-7PM and one hour prior to the service on Sunday. Burial Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
