Obituary for Clara Calkins

Clara Calkins, a life long resident of Milford, died at Huron Valley Hospital on Thursday, November 6, 2008. She was 95 years old. Born on March 23, 1913 on her grandfather�s farm at Old Plank and Buno Roads in Milford, she was the daughter of Arthur and Maggie May (Ward) Major. She joined Milford Methodist Church in 1927 and was valedictorian of the Class of 1931 at Milford High School and graduated from nursing school in 1936. In 1938 she married Gordon Calkins in Angola, Indiana and returned to Milford to make their home on Hickory Street on the South Side.
Clara worked at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Detroit and as an industrial nurse at General Motors Proving Grounds. She stayed at home to raise her son and daughter and in 1948 went to work with Dr. Gibson in Milford. For over fifty years she was a Red Cross Volunteer organizing blood drives in the community at Ford Motor in Wixom, Oakland Community College, local churches and elsewhere. She was a volunteer at Huron Valley Hospital, worked �Well Child� clinics sponsored by the county health department and was a past president and active member of the Milford Historical Society and the Milford Monday Literary Club. She was honored as Huron Valley Chamber of Commerce�s �Citizen of the Year� in 1989 for her many decades of selfless volunteer services in the community.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, she was active in Milford Methodist Church. She had the great gift of always seeing the best in people and bringing a warm smile and great energy to whatever project was before her.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gordon (d. 1994), Clara is survived by her children, Chuck (Anne) Calkins of Highland, Jeanette (John) Davis of S. Carolina; grandchildren, Brian, Mark, Chuck, Aaron; 3 great-grandchildren and many loving extended family members and friends who join with her family in mourning her death and giving thanks to God for her life among them.

Funeral from Milford United Methodist Church, 1200 Atlantic Street, Milford, Monday, 11am with Rev. Gregg Mayberry officiating. Burial Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit at Lynch& Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Saturday 5-9pm and Sunday 2-9pm.
