Obituary for Clare Norton "Nortie" Caswell

Clare Norton Caswell born June 12, 1927 in the Village of Milford, MI, the eldest child of late Clare L. & Viletta Caswell, passed away at his residence after sustaining injuries from a fall, on September 9, 2022.


He served in the Army in Europe during WWII. After returning home he married his sweetheart, Norma Allene Burley. They celebrated 70 years of marriage, raising four children. They were active members of the West Highland Baptist Church for many years where Norty enjoyed ushering and he and Norma delivered Meals on Wheels while in their 80’s.


Part of a group who started the Milford Little League, he became the first League President. He continued serving the Village of Milford 6 years as Councilman and 10 years as Village President.


Actively employed most of his life from Bowling Pin Setter, helping Buck Wilson deliver newspapers and mail, (Nortie would be called out of school to pick up the mail at the train station), working at General Motors Emissions Lab and enjoying interacting with kids as a Crossing Guard for several years.


He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, where he held several positions and served on the Color Guard, honored to carry the American Flag. A card carrying member of the Milford Coffee Club, and being a charter member of the Lynch & Sons All Weather No Excuses Non-Denominational Varsity Walking Squad.


He will be missed by many, especially his children, James (Onalee) Caswell, John (Jeanne) Caswell, Janice Caswell, and Jeffery (Rosanna) Caswell; grandchildren, Lahring (Mirelle) Caswell, Lynette (Patrick) Piejak, Joshua Caswell, Holli Caswell, Jennifer (Clay) Hendrixson, Heather Caswell, Ashley (Andrew) Lewis, Sarah (David) Barnes, and Daniel Lima; also several treasured great-grand children; sister, Dolores Courson and brother, Wayne (Mary) Caswell; Preceded in death by his parents, Clare L. and Viletta Caswell; his loving wife, Norma Caswell, Grandson Christopher Caswell, Grand-daughter Christen (Michael) Knight; and Great grandson, Tyler Sweeney.


In lieu of flowers, Nortie’s family would like you to consider a donation to the charity of your choice in his memory.


Visitation will take lace at Lynch & Sons, Milford, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, MI 48381 on Thursday, September 15, 2022 from 5:00PM - 8:00PM.


A Funeral Service will take place at West Highland Baptist Church, 1116 N. Hickory Ridge Rd., Milford, MI 48380 on Friday, September 16, 2022 at 11:00AM. Friends may gather at the Church beginning at 10:00AM. Burial and Military Honors to follow in Milford Memorial Cemetery. Pastor Tom Roberts to officiate.
