Obituary for Daniel J. Smith

Daniel James Smith, a longtime resident of Hartland passed peacefully at home on December 17, 2018.

Dan was born on March 3, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan along with his twin sister, Marjorie, one of four children born to Francis “Frank” and Loretta (nee. Carey) Smith. Dan grew up in Detroit and following his graduation from University of Detroit Jesuit High School and college, he earned his Master’s Degree from Wayne State University.

Dan was a devoted husband, father, teacher and a man dedicated to his faith. He met Marilyn Marlo at a political event at the Whittier Hotel in Detroit in 1967 and the couple married on June 14, 1969 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Detroit. Daniel and Marilyn eventually built their home in Hartland and were immediately active with St. John Catholic Church. For over thirty two years, Dan taught reading and social studies at Thompson Middle School in Southfield and later continued teaching in the Milford and Hartland area.

Dan’s selfless nature and kind hearted demeanor suited him well in his work, along with being a dedicated example and leader to his family. He always put others ahead of his needs and was a devoted father to Sandra and Daniel and later a doting grandfather. Often pushing and demanding of his children, Dan did everything he could to set his children up for success. A lover of all sports, especially basketball, golf and baseball, Dan enjoyed attending his children’s games and coaching basketball. He was Sandy’s loudest support and Daniel’s biggest fan, and that tradition continued with his grandchildren — he loved being with his grandkids. He enjoyed watching Colin’s basketball games, Sydney’s swim events, and Paulena was a great helper by giving tissues to her grandpa. He also enjoyed summers in northern Michigan and Greenbush, and was a talent and handyman around the house. Dan will be missed for his quiet, charitable, soft hearted nature, his role as the family patriarch and impact and legacy he left with his family, many students, colleagues, and friends.

He will be missed by many, especially, beloved wife of nearly fifty years, Marilyn R. Smith; their children Daniel F. (Brianne) Smith, Sandra A. (Scott) McDowell; grandchildren Colin McDowell, Sydney McDowell, Paulena Smith. Siblings: Thomas E. Smith, twin sister Dr. Marjorie Parsons, and the late William E. Smith.
