David Lee Crockett, a resident of Highland Twp. for fifty years, native of Brainerd, Minnesota, and retired engineer from the Milford Proving Grounds, died at his home on May 20, 2016 after a battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.
Born on September 3, 1937 in Brainerd, Minnesota, the son of Herb and Louise (Mrozek) Crockett, Davy grew up in Minnesota where he was a graduate of South High School in Minneapolis. He joined the National Guard while in high school, and following graduation his hometown celebrated their own Davy Crockett’s enlistment with the U.S. Navy and Walt Disney honored him by sending a coonskin hat. He served aboard the USS Howard W. Gilmore.
It was during his senior year of high school that he met Claire Giesler. They fell in love and married on August 10, 1957 in St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin, Minnesota. In 1966 they moved to Milford, Michigan, where Davy began his career at the General Motors Proving Grounds. He went on to enjoy over thirty years as an engineer there before his retirement in 1996.
In his spare time he enjoyed golfing at the Links in Novi and with friends and leagues at Hartland Glen and Dunham Hills golf clubs. He enjoyed traveling and planned special vacations throughout the U.S. with his family and also took trips to enjoy Indy and Stock Car races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Michigan International Speedway.
Since his diagnosis with cancer last year he fought hard to be with his family as long as he could. He loved them so dearly and was so very proud of his grandchildren and being able to celebrate their milestones and graduations. All will miss him dearly.
In addition to Claire, his beloved wife of over 58 years, he is survived by his son, Terry Crockett; his daughter, Linda (Mark) deLancellotti; grandchildren, Jason (Andrea) O’Leary, Jennifer Crockett, Jessica Crockett, Jamie Crockett, Christina, Jordan and Christopher Cenzer; great grandchildren, Kassidy, Aiden, Brooklyn, Jonathon, Madison, Carter and Kendall; sister, Tanya (Don) Clark; niece, Lauren, and many dear friends who join his family in mourning his loss and giving thanks for his life among them. He was preceded in death by sons, David (Cindy) Crockett, Jr. and Douglas Crockett.
A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday, May 26, at 11AM.
