Obituary for David Robert Miller

David Robert Miller, a resident of Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township, former resident of Novi, died peacefully at the age of 63 at home in the care of his family on October 5, 2017 after a courageous seven-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

David was born on April 7, 1954 in Reading, Pennsylvania, the son of Robert Earl Miller and Patricia Ann (Mill) Miller. He was a proud graduate of Georgia Tech where he earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering which included a co-op program with Delta Airlines. It was at Georgia Tech that he met fellow student and the love of his life, Cheryl Vancleave.

After graduation, David worked with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in West Palm Beach, Florida for five years after which he began a thirty-five year career with Williams International in Walled Lake, Michigan. Throughout his rewarding career, he was revered as a hard-working, colleague and friend.

David and Cheryl moved to Novi in 1983, and for the past sixteen years have enjoyed their home on Lake Sherwood. David relished opportunities to host parties and entertain; his annual Oktoberfest was a favorite with family and friends and always included fine German beers and food. David also enjoyed photography, all things Georgia Tech, the Detroit Red Wings, putting together his legendary, annual Christmas train display, as well as adding to his collection of movies and music, especially Jimmy Buffett, and supporting his children’s high school and college marching bands. Above all else, David cherished spending time with Cheryl and their extraordinary grandchildren in Texas and North Carolina.

In February of 2017, David was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He fought fiercely until peacefully passing at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Thursday evening, October 5, 2017. Until the very end, David was able to work and do all the things he loved, living his life as he always did, admirably and with a smile. He will be dearly missed.

In addition to Cheryl, his beloved wife of over forty years, he is survived by his daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Chad) Waterman of Haslet, TX; his son, Christopher Scott (Meredith) Miller of Huntersville, NC; his adored grandchildren, Leah and Paige Waterman and Jacalyn and David Thomas Miller; his mother, Patricia Ann Miller; brothers, Glenn (Linda), Jeffery (Stephanie), Robert Jr. (Maija), many nieces, nephews, dear friends, colleagues at Williams International, and their dog, Gus. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Earl Miller.

A Memorial Service will be held at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 2905 S. Commerce Rd., Walled Lake, on Wednesday, October 11, at 11AM with Pastor Dennis Meyette officiating. Friends may visit from 10AM until the time of service. A luncheon will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks you to consider donations to Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church or to the "Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC)" at Georgia Tech in support of science outreach and education.
