Obituary for David T. Hayhow

David Hayhow, 86, treasured father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died on Jan. 7, 2018, in Plymouth, MI after a brief illness.

David was born July 14, 1931 in Pontiac, MI. He graduated from Hillsdale High School and received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Michigan State University. In the midst of his education, he served in the U.S. Army as a reporter in the Korean War. In 1955, he married the amazing Janice Bosserman and they celebrated 60 wild and wonderful years together before she passed away in May 2016.

A man profoundly moved to change the world for the better, David embarked on many exciting career adventures, including reporter and owner of newspapers in Illinois and Michigan; publisher of the Brussels Times in Brussels, Belgium; campaign director then executive assistant to Michigan Lt. Gov. James Damman; co-owner of Publicom, Inc. in Lansing, MI; and co-founder of Michigania, a Michigan products store, one of many entrepreneurial adventures he undertook in his life. He was a passionate supporter of Michigan State University School of Journalism and then board member and board chair of Olivet College for many years. The community and political causes he supported throughout his life are many; his favorite quote in life, always on the wall of his study, is: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

In his spare moments, he loved spending time in northern Michigan with his family and playing golf with his long-time buddies.

David is survived by daughter Betsy Hemming (Joe), son Bill (Lisa); his grandchildren: Brian, David (Erin) and Matt (Sarah) Hayhow and Erin and Caty Hemming, and great-grandson Ryan Hayhow. Burial will be a private family gathering. A memorial open house will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home in Milford, MI.

For those who wish to honor this great man, please consider running for office, supporting the community or honoring a personal passion. Donations are also welcome to Angela Hospice or sheshouldrun.org – he would appreciate the irony of still supporting causes at this point in time.

We love our dad, granddad and great-granddad and will miss him greatly.
