Obituary for Deborah Jeanne Cape

Deborah Jeanne Cape, of Ypsilanti, Michigan, died on March 11, 2020. She was 63 years old.

Deborah was number 4 of seven children. When she was a child, she made the most important decision of her life: to make Jesus her Savior. Her love for the Lord carried over to her family, friends, and the elderly.

Deborah’s “objective” on her resume was to provide “quality and loving care for the elderly”. And that is exactly what she did for over 45 years. Through the years, she won numerous appreciation awards, including the 5-Star Employee and the Michigan Hospice Award for Hard Work and Dedication.

When Debbie had a permanent back injury from an accident with a drunk driver at the age of 31, she refused to go on disability and continued working 50 hours or more each week. Her clients saw her more than a CNA. Mildred, age 97, whom Debbie was caring for before her heart attack and stroke, said it best, “She was more than my caregiver, she was my best friend.” Debbie’s love for the elderly was definitely her calling, a gift from God.

Debbie prepared hundreds of home cooked meals for her family, those in need, and for her clients. She never wanted anything in return. You could not pay her for anything, yet she was always so quick to monetarily bless others. She also blessed others by her honesty and forgiving spirit: caring and wanting the best for those she loved so dearly.

Ephesians 4: 32 sums up Debbie’s life:  “And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.”

Deborah is survived by her mother, Phyllis Cape; siblings, Thomas (Diane) Cape, Susan (Bill) Burnett, Sharon (David) Sweet, John Cape, David (Luann) Cape and Philip (Vicki) Cape; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Erin, Angie, Matthew, Michael, Jeanette, David, Jonathan, Deborah, Brittani, Robert, Katie, Annie, Renae, Joshua, Alicia and Amanda; 21 great-nieces and nephews as well as many close friends and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Harry Cape in 2016.

A Funeral Service will be held at Cornerstone Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 9455 Hilton Rd, Brighton, on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 11 AM. Pastor Brian Tweedie officiating. Friends may visit at the church from 10 AM until the time of the service. Burial White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, MI
