Obituary for Dennis N. Powers

Dennis N. Powers, 79, longtime resident of Highland, Michigan passed away on January 16, 2022.

Dennis was a very respected judge, attorney, marine, and a family man. Dennis was very devout in his faith and had a tremendous work ethic. He had a genuine love of people and routinely put others before himself.

After graduating from high school, Dennis married his wife of 59 years, Patricia Powers. Shortly after their marriage, Dennis joined the United States Marine Corps where he had boots in the sand in the active theatre of southeast Asian-Vietnam, and he was honorably discharged thereafter. After his discharge he began his education at the University of Detroit in 1960 and graduated in 1964 with a B.A. and obtained his teaching certificate. He continued his education at the University of Detroit obtaining his Masters in 1968 in counseling and business.

He began teaching junior high and high school students for the next 2 years and then began working at General Motors as a trouble shooter for their manufacturing and dealer organizations, while attending law school in the evening at the Detroit College of Law where he graduated in 1974 with his Juris Doctorate. Dennis had a private practice for 24 years and assisted people with civil and criminal cases and provided numerous hours of pro bono work. During this time, he was a Trustee for the Highland Township Library Board, a Trustee of Highland Township, and was elected as an Oakland County Commissioner. In 1998 he was appointed as a Judge in the 52-1 District Court in Novi, Michigan, where he retired in 2014. During his time in private practice and as a Judge in Oakland County, he earned a reputation as a well respected attorney and judge. After his retirement, he continued to work as an attorney and real estate broker in Michigan and Florida. He also became certified as a mediator and successfully mediated numerous civil and domestic cases.

Through his life, Dennis had a genuine appreciation of others. He listened to them and provided solid advice based on his broad range of knowledge and his wisdom. His drive and energy led him to obtain his pilot license as Dennis loved to fly and spent many hours enjoying the skies above. He enjoyed his time with many great friends, while serving in the Color Guard with the AMVETS Post 2006, as well as the American Legion Post 2016 in Milford, and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Highland. Dennis’ faith led him to study the word of God and speak to many others on this important subject. In his free time, Dennis spent time in the Upper Peninsula at deer camp (the “Shack”) where he loved spending time in the woods.

Dennis dearly loved his grand-children, his family, and Jesus Christ.

Devoted husband of Patricia for 59 years. Loving father of Michael Powers, Scott Powers (Maryanne), and the late Kathryn Powers. Proud grandfather of Joshua, Jeremy, and Jordan Powers. Dear brother of Robert “Bob” Powers (Sue), Nancy Platt (Bill), and the late Ronald Powers (Patti). Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
