Obituary for Dick W. Drews

Richard W. "Dick" Drews, a long time resident of Hamburg and Milford, died at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor on Tuesday morning, June 2, 2009 after a long struggle with renal disease. He was 73 years old. Born on August 22, 1935, he was the son of Elmer and Mary (Tichnor) Drews. He grew up in Perry, Ohio where he was a lineman on the undefeated 1953 football team at Perry High School. A natural athlete, he was a 4-year letterman in three sports, set school records in track and field including a Perry High School record in the mile- a record that went unbroken for many years. He graduated in 1954 and attended Adrian College on a football scholarship.

Dick moved to Cass City, MI where he worked for General Telephone Company and was transferred to Milford in 1970. He sold real estate with the Clay Stokes agency on Main Street but as the father of three sons, and eager to be part of their busy lives, he founded his own window and office cleaning and general services company so that he could work flexible hours around their ever-changing schedules. He hired students and young people and schooled them in good work habits and conduct. Always active in the community, he served as president of the Milford Rotary Club and earned that organizations highest award, a Paul Harris Fellowship, for outstanding service. He served on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce and could be counted on to pitch in on local volunteer projects. He saw himself as an Ohio farm boy who always had time to visit with friends, share stories and philosophies, triumphs and troubles. Most of all he loved his sons, cheering them on and living a little vicariously through their challenges and successes and their growing families, his pride in them never far from the conversation.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Ann (Huff) Drews in 1987. He is survived by sons, Michael (Vicki), Mark (Tone Wang-Nilsen), Ben (MiSuk); grandchildren, Emily, Ross, Cortni, Jordan, Vance, Jefferson, Kaja, Ben and Benjamin. Also survived by step-sons, Jeff (Christina) Huff, Michael (Debra) Huff and Eric Huff; sister, Evelyn Adkins; numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford on Friday, June 5th at 7PM with Rev. James Braid officiating. Friends may visit from 6PM until the time of service. In Lieu of flowers memorials are encouraged to the Richard W. Drews Fund for At-Risk Students, PO Box 673, Farmington, MI 48332-0673. The Drews family cordially invites you to continue in celebrating Dick's life on Saturday, June 6th at 1PM in Central Park in Milford, MI. For more information please phone 248-684-6645.
