Obituary for Donald Chester Colegrove

Donald Chester Colegrove, a longtime resident of Milford, MI died on January 14, 2020. He was 85 years old.

Donald was born in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the small town of Trout Lake, on November 3, 1934 to parents, Samuel and Luli Colegrove. At the age of 5, his family moved to Milford and he has been a Proud Milford Man ever since.

Don attended Milford High School and played many sports, excelling at baseball and even had a tryout with the Detroit Tigers. During his high school years he met Doris Fae Honsinger. The two were very fond of each other and began courting. Don graduated from Milford High School in 1954 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1955. He was stationed in Germany and served his country until being discharged in 1956. His courtship with Doris picked up upon his arrival home and Don wasted no time Marrying Doris on February 16, 1957 at the Milford Presbyterian Church.

Don and Doris’s roots grew even deeper here in Milford as they soon started a family, raising their three girls, Lisa, Amy and Sara. They enjoyed spending time together and went on many camping trips to places such as Traverse City, Port Austin, California and the Smokey Mountains to name a few. Don supported his family by driving a milk route in town until accepting a position with the Milford Proving Grounds. Don played on the Proving Grounds softball team and was very proud of the outstanding work he provided General Motors until his retirement in the late 1980’s.

The two escaped Michigan’s cold weather by moving to Tennessee following Don’s retirement. Don enjoyed playing golf in the warmer climate and was ecstatic when he landed his first Hole-In-One. Don enjoyed his retirement in Tennessee and appreciated the quality time he was able to spend with Doris. The two had lots of fun together relaxing, socializing, taking vacations and going on cruises.

Don moved back to Milford five years ago to be closer to his daughters, and his grandchildren. He loved spending time with those closest to him and he was a very well liked man in town that seemed to know everyone. He always had a smile on his face and you couldn’t help but grin when you heard his distinct, loud, contagious laugh. Donald C. Colegrove was a gentle, kindhearted family man who will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris; his daughters, Lisa (Donald d. 2016) Heistand, Amy (Guy) Jones and Sara (Raymond) LaGallee; grandchildren, Ryan (Sarah) Heistand, Brandon (Angela) Heistand, Jeremy Heistand, Brad (Kira) Elliott, Kyle (Jessica) Elliott, Quinn (Stephanie) Elliott and Jacob Houser; 10 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Luli (nee. Crisp) Colegrove; brothers, Albert, Jim, and Ray Colegrove and his sister, Ethel Motley.
