Donald F. Spiker, a long time resident of Milford, and lately of Henderson, Nevada, died at St. Joseph Hospital in Howell on Tuesday, April 2, 2013. He was 84 years old.
Born on December 8, 1928 in Detroit, he was the son of Dennis and Katherine (Hahn) Spiker. He attended Tappan Grade School in Detroit and transferred to Turner Grade School where, in the fifth grade, he met the love of his life, Adeline Tripoli. At age 17 Don enlisted in the U.S. Army and was trained as a paratrooper. After his return, he finished high school and took up his courtship of Adeline in earnest and the two were married on October 1st, 1949 at St. Epiphany parish in Detroit. He served as a mail carrier in Detroit before going to work on Livernois Avenue which was lit up with lights from the used car lots. Don went to work with Homer Chevrolet and later took over as used car manager for Avis Ford. He came to Milford in the mid 1960s where he opened Spiker Ford Dealership, which he operated on South Milford Road from 1967-1995. He was a past president of the Milford Rotary Club and active with the Ford Dealers Advertising Fund. Second only to his passion for selling new cars was his passion for buying old ones. He enjoyed the deal-making and tire kicking and loved restoring old vehicles, seeing in them the salvageable history of a great city and nation and industry. He loved the Concours dElegance and frequented antique car shows and rallies and filled his home with many trophies. The antique fire engine, which he gifted to the Milford Fire Department, will transport him to his requiems and grave. He was a long time member of St. Marys Catholic Church in Milford.
Don Spiker is survived by his wife of over sixty-three years, Adeline; by their daughters, Katherine (Joel) Leik, Dona (Arlan) Gulko, Pamela Spiker, Sharon (Allen) Miotke, and son, Donald (Cassandra) Spiker; also 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends who join with his family in mourning his death and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1955 E Commerce Rd., Milford, Monday, April 8, 11 AM with Fr. Manuel J. Chircop officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E Liberty, Milford, Saturday 6-9 and Sunday 1-8. Rosary Sunday 7 PM. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
