Obituary for Donald H. Dopierala

Donald H. Dopierala, a resident of Highland Township and former resident of St. Clair Shores died on Saturday, June 14, 2008 at Spectrum Health Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was 68 years old. Born in Detroit on October 12, 1939, one of seven children to Henry & Lillian (nee Schmanski) Dopierala, Don grew up in Detroit and graduated from St. Anthonys High School in 1957. That same year, while attending a neighbors wedding, he met Patricia Carr and soon fell in love. Don & Pat would celebrate their own marriage on the 10th of June, 1961 at St. Julianna in Detroit and remained in Detroit before making their first home in St. Clair Shores. For the next decade, Don continued to study chemical engineering at University of Detroit, applying his bachelors degree to his work with Celanese Corporation before beginning his longtime career as a Paint Engineering Manager with Ford Automotive. Blessed with the births of their children, Don, Dawn, Debbie and Dan, they raised their family with deep faith through their strong connections to their home Parish. In the early 1970s they moved to their home on Duck Lake in Highland Township and have enjoyed neighboring Church of The Holy Spirit where they have been charter members since the churchs dedication in 1977.

Don Dopierala was a quiet man of great faith and fidelity. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. John Howard Council #8500, and a limitless contributor to the growth of Holy Spirit Parish-focusing in particular on the Churchs Adoration Chapel. Over the years he has been grateful to see his family grow with the additions of his grandchildren, enjoying occasions to spoil them with his special attention and generosity. Following his retirement from Ford in 1994, he enjoyed snow skiing, boating, hunting, fishing and especially golfing local courses with his pals. In 2004 Don had his dream house built in The Villages overlooking a golf course, there they enjoyed entertaining the many visitors from Michigan in the winter months.

In addition to his beloved wife, Patricia (nee Carr) and children, Don (Kim), Dawn (Dave) Harmsen, Debbie (Adam) Caprara-Stals, Dan (Lisa), Don is survived by his grandchildren, Brooke Dopierala, Lindsay, Melissa & Nicole Harmsen, Emma Caprara, Donny & Makenzie Dopierala; brothers, Jim (Charlene), Mike (Bonnie), Jerry (Nancy), Dave; sisters, Peggy Dopierala, Joan (Ron) Trombley; brothers & sisters-in-law, Bill (Anita) Carr, Rock (Diane) Carr, Terry (Maureen) Carr, Jim Carr and Dawn (Paul) Mecklenborg. His numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends including his golf buddies, Angelo, Howard, Gordon and Mike also survive.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Rd., Highland, on Wednesday, June 18th at 10AM, with Fr. Leo Lulko officiating. Burial Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, Tuesday 4-9PM with a Rosary at 7PM. Memorials may be made in his name to the Church of the Holy Spirit Building Fund.
