Obituary for Donald I. Messing

Donald I. Messing, age 76, of White Lake, Michigan passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 9, 2016, in Commerce Township, Michigan, with his daughters by his side. Don was the beloved father of Denise Messing Lippitt (Ron) and Sandy Messing Specht, and the treasured grandfather of Kelly Specht, Matthew Specht, Maureen Lippitt, Caroline Lippitt, and Amelia Lippitt. He was born April 9, 1939 in Ruth, Michigan, the son of Wilfred and Wanda (Skorka) Messing, who preceded him in death. He is also survived by his brothers, Kenneth Messing, Lowell Messing, and Dexter Messing, and their families. He was preceded in death by his brother Virgil Messing. He will be missed by numerous family and friends.

Don was a proud and patriotic Army Veteran who would happily sit and talk for hours about airplanes with anyone. He loved the outdoors, enjoying Northern Michigan where he raised his family. He volunteered for over 20 years at Yankee Air Museum at Willow Run Airport in Belleville, Michigan, restoring World War II aircraft. Working on the Yankee Lady, one of the last a handful of flying B-17s in the world, was his passion for years.

He had an unrelenting work ethic, spending his work years in the concrete and trucking business. He owned his own concrete business for 10 years in Kewadin, Michigan, before returning to and then retiring from Clawson Concrete (Levy Corporation).

He loved the open road and traveled the country and the world, never tiring of exploring new places and meeting new people. He was always looking forward to his next adventure.

The Funeral Service will be Friday, January 15, 2016 at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church, 13667 W. Highland Rd, Hartland at 11:30AM. The family will receive family and friends from 10AM until the time of service.
