Donald Neil Stevenson of Milford died on Monday, June 6, 2011 in the care of his family and Arbor Hospice. He was 88 years old.
Born in Detroit on April 15, 1923, he was the son of Charles and Hazel Stevenson. He grew up in Detroit, attended Cass Tech High School, and soon after that joined the U.S. Navy to serve as an Electrical Technician. He met Hazelle in 1945 at a dance in Washington D.C., and they became partners for life on and off of the dance floor. After the war ended, Don brought his bride home to Detroit to start their family. He worked as an electrician throughout the Detroit area and was recently recognized for 65 years service to the IBEW. In the 1980's he built his wife's dream home in Milford, and the couple got involved in their new community while they eased into retirement. They volunteered as poll workers on Election Days; Don served in the Oakland County Mounted Division with his horse Scholar; and, he played Taps as part of the Honor Guard with American Legion Post 216. He loved tinkering with nuts and bolts as well as computer projects. He enjoyed playing cards, bike riding, roller skating and all manner of social activities. Don Stevenson was well known for his easy smile and his gentlemanly ways. And more than anything, he loved his family, spending hours around the dinner table sharing stories - his and theirs.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife Hazelle in 2006, he is survived by his daughter Dorene (Ted) Grekowicz and his son Ron (Sheila) Stevenson; his grandchildren Paul (Megan) Grekowicz, Brian (Audrey) Grekowicz, Kari Stevenson, Kelli (Jimmy) Maxwell; his great-grandchildren Jenna, Bennett, and Kate; his sister, Joy Stevenson; and his dear friend Eleanor. Many extended family and friends will also join in mourning the death of a good man and giving thanks to God for his life among them.
