Obituary for Donna Jean Wood

Donna Jean Wood, a resident of Highland Township and Avon Park, Florida, passed away on Thursday, April 23, 2009. She was 80 years old. Born on February 18, 1929 in Vestaburg, Michigan, she was one of nine children in the bustling household of Ralph and Mary Elizabeth Erskin. Donnie learned how to joke and pull pranks to keep up with her older brothers. Right after high school, in 1947, Donna Jean married Rex Wood. She dove right into the adventure of motherhood, caring for her four children Pamela, Cheryl, Brian and Debra. Donna Jean continued to make her home merry with singing and games as the family moved from place to place 11 times. They made friends in every spot, hosting dinners and card parties.
After Rex and Donna Jean retired they settled into a summer cottage on White Lake and wintered in Avon Park, Florida. The active couple went on adventurous trips across the country, even sailing through the sky in a hot air balloon. Donna Jean put her natural gifts as an artist into practice by painting ceramics, making dolls and crafting. She brought music into the lives of the seniors in her neighborhood by starting a rhythm band and putting together uproarious performances.
The fun-loving nature of Donna Jean multiplied as grandchildren came along. She teased and laughed with ten grandchildren, swimming alongside them at the lake and walking the beaches with them in Florida. As time passed, Nonnie still played catch and tickled her five great-grandchildren until they squealed with laughter. Even to her last days, Donna Jean smiled as she chatted on the phone and gave hugs to visiting family members.

In addition to her beloved husband, Rex Wood, Donna Jean is survived by her loving children, Pamela (Kim) Troyer, Cheryl (Doug) Phillips, Brian Wood, Debra Steen; Grandchildren, Nicholas (Sarah), Brandon (Kate), Andrew (Talina), Treavor (Shawna), Rustin (Monica), Patrick, Mitchel, Carmyn (Samir), Levan (Pam), Krystal (Zach); 5 great grandsons; 1 sister; 3 brothers; many brothers and sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews and many longtime friends. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Rex.

A Memorial Service will be held at Highland United Methodist Church, 680 W. Livingston Rd., Highland, Monday, April 27 at 11AM with Rev. James Kummer officiating. Friends may visit with the family one-hour prior to service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Parkinsons Foundation or to Highland United Methodist Church.
