Obituary for Doris Ann Thome

Doris Ann Thome died peacefully at home on September 6, 2019.

Doris Ann was born on December 4, 1933, in Jackson, Michigan to Jacob "Jack" Edward and Doris Ann Keyes. Doris grew up in Wayne, Michigan with her twin sister, Marcia and her brother, Jack. Doris lost her mother (Doris) in 1970. Her father remarried (Eileen) and she played an important role in the families life.

The young Doris Keyes and Harlan Thome attended St. Mary High School in Wayne together, but reconnected in 1955, upon Harlan's return from the Korean War. The couple quickly fell in love and were married on May 12, 1956. Together, Doris and Harlan raised their family of two daughters and four sons in Westland before moving to Milford in 1969. For over thirty years, Doris enjoyed work as head cashier at Breen’s IGA, until her retirement in the late 1980’s. In 1990, Doris and Harlan moved from Dawson Road to the Village of Milford.

Doris was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church since 1969. She was involved in or gave leadership to ministries such as the quilting group, coffee socials, the annual church fair, Meals on Wheels, funeral luncheons, the Memorial Day celebration and Muffins in the Park and many other charities. She loved golf, quilting, gardening and was always happy.

Doris was a loving wife, a giving mother and a doting grandmother. She found great joy in spending time with her family and helped, in so many ways, with all of her grandchildren. She was ever present and could be found at every child and grandchild’s events, including each kindergarten, high school or college graduation. Doris and Harlan loved traveling and theatre, and often combined the two. Each year, they attended the Stratford Festival in Ontario, Canada to indulge in a weekend of plays and musicals. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they celebrated in Ireland and visited Italy with the church choir. For over forty years, it has been family tradition to vacation in Ludington, Michigan.

Doris will be forever remembered for her kind spirit, giving nature and her love for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by Harlan, her beloved husband of 63 years; her six dear children, Linda (Russ) Peasley, Dave (Sue) Thome, Leigh Ann (Steven) Varilone, Steve (Lori) Thome, Andy (Joan) Thome, Pete (Diane) Thome; 17 grandchildren, Alison Martin, Melissa (Dave) Stewart, Kate Thome, Matt (Amber) Thome, Evan, Nate and Scott Varilone, Ali (Ben) Dodson, Alex (Brian) Cabell, Steve (Casey Taylor) Thome, Jacob and Mitchell Thome, Ryan and Brad Thome, Kailey (Kyle Rutz), Christine (Daniel Broder) and Michael; 8 great-grandchildren, Joseph, Tyler, Connor, Madilyn, Luna, Esmae, Lennon and Bentley; her twin sister, Marcia (the late Sam) Lawson, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Sunday, September 8, 2019 from 1-7 PM, Rosary 6 PM.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1955 E. Commerce St., Milford on Monday, September 9, 2019 at 11 AM. Msgr. John Budde to officiate. Burial St. Mary’s Cemetery. A luncheon will follow.
