Obituary for Doris Marilyn Macika

Doris Marilyn Macika went home to her Savior on Saturday, October 26, 2019 following an illness while in the care of her family.

Doris was born in Jamestown, New York, on February 27, 1937 to parents Charles and Kathryn (Culver) Phillips. After World War II, the Phillips moved to the Detroit area. Doris flourished in Detroit, attended Cody High School, where she was Prom Queen, and went on to Wayne State University. Singing was one of her passions that lasted a life time. She sang in the high school choir and was a part of a female trio, "The Rhythmettes". Doris continued to participate in church choirs throughout her life and was very active in the St. Michael’s Catholic Church choir. Doris especially enjoyed singing her solo part, Ave Maria, during the Christmas program every year.

Doris met the love of her life, Norman Macika, while in grade school at the age of 12. They started dating after graduating from high school and were married on May 5, 1957. Norm and Doris were blessed with three children; Steven, Daniel, and Karen, while making their home in Livonia, Michigan for thirty years and living the American dream. While there, Doris worked for Tektronix for fifteen years.

Following Norm’s retirement, the family moved to Highland, a small community in northwest Oakland County in the Dunham Lakes Estates. Their home, nestled in the tall pine trees, provided the perfect setting for picnics, swimming, and canoeing. With the three kids all married and raising their own families, Norm and Doris decided to add to their family and adopted Bonnie, a beautiful black Labrador Retriever. Bonnie added much joy and comfort to their home and day to day living.

As faithful members of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Highland for the last thirty-two years, they enjoyed worshiping their Lord. As Doris journeyed through her life, surrounded by her loving husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, life-long girlfriends, and Bonnie, she was a blessing to all who knew her. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all that knew her.

Doris is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Norm; sons, Dan (Kathy) and Steve (Debbie) Macika; grandchildren, Nicholas, Kaylee, Justin, Brandon, Lauren and Jayne; great-grandchildren, Camden and Madison; step-grandchildren, Christian, Siam and Nila; son-in-law, Paul Schendel as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Karen Schendel (d. 2016) and her brother, Chuck Phillips.
