Dr. Dennis P. Kenny, a great citizen of Highland Township, died peacefully at his home early Sunday morning, August 17, 2008. He was 85 years old. Born in Hardwood, Michigan on February 26, 1923, one of six children, the son of Thomas & Esther (nee Charlebois) Kenny, Dr. Kenny learned early on the value of a hard days work and living selflessly while growing up on the family farm in Michigans Upper Peninsula. He was a woodsman and a farmer who worked with and for his family. Because he worked, he didnt graduate from High School, but in 1943, he enlisted with the United States Army Air Corps. He was with the 462nd Base during WWII, and after returning home, took up flying and received his pilot license. He returned home in 1946 and received an honorable discharge. He studied to become a doctor at the Still College of Osteopathy in Des Moines, Iowa and earned his medical degree even before completing his studies for his bachelors degree at Wayne State University in Detroit. On July 11, 1961, he married the love of his life, Barbara Joan Charlick (nee Shepard), and they made their home in Highland Township with daughter Linda. The Kennys were later blessed with the births of two more daughters, Lorie and Lisa and a son, Dennis Jr. Not long after the birth of Lisa, they built and moved into the family homestead on Oltesvig Lane. Dr. Kenny devoted most of his time, his exceptional skills and all of his heart to his longtime family practice on Livingston Road and the people of the local community. He could be counted on for physicals for all the local Police & Fire Departments as well as the students of Huron Valley Schools. Before 911 service, it was Dr. Kenny who was called out of his bed for emergencies, and he was one of the last doctors to ever make housecalls. Outside of his professional practice, he was a gracious neighbor and an exceptional host who was known for both generosity and his wry sense of humor. Doc enjoyed tinkering on anything and everything in his garage and around the house. When he wasnt in the office or at the hospital, he could be found rebuilding cars & trucks or grading the road with his John Deer tractor or old Greeny, his pick up truck. He could fix nearly anything with a little gorilla glue and duct tape. Dr. Kenny retired in 2000, but could not be kept from continued service. He volunteered briefly at a local nursing home, but found a new opportunity to work as a pair of hands for nephew Dean Reed. Over the years, both he and his wife have enjoyed the opportunity to see their familys legacy grow happily and healthy with grand and great grandchildren.
Dr. Kenny was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 47 years, Barbara Joan Kenny in January of this year. He is survived by his daughters, Linda Jean (Robert) Sobieray of Milford, Lorie Frances DeRocher of Highland, Lisa Anne (Chuck) Yanchulis of Holly; son, Dennis P. (Kristen) Kenny, Jr. of Goodrich, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many loving friends, extended family members and colleagues.
