Obituary for Ed Morley

Edward Burrows Morley, III, (Ed), died of cancer at his home in Highland Twp.on Saturday, October 12, 2013. He was 66 years old.

Born on April 19, 1947 in Saginaw, he was the son of Edward B. Morley, Jr. and Anne Hewes Messick Morley. Soon after graduation from high school, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. He was honorably discharged in 1969 having achieved the rank of Sergeant. He earned a B.A. Degree in Business from Michigan State University and made his living as a Projects Manager specializing in Travel, Health Care and Benefits Processing. He was married to Rebecca L. Morley until 1998. Their son, Sam survives, as does Eds partner for the past nine years, Veronica Locke. He regarded his son, Sam, his life with Ms. Locke and his ability to bend as the river flows as the great accomplishments of his life.

Ed Morley -- Tedder to many of his lifelong friends -- was an avid reader, a naturalist and birder, who loved Civil War History, watching Jeopardy and old films, and being of service to his fellow man. He was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and took seriously the notion that we should love our neighbors. Ethical behavior, as he was fond of quoting Aldo Leopold, is doing the right thing when no one else is watching -- even when doing the wrong thing is legal. He found his moral compass and religious instruction in the written works of Aldo Leopold and Don Miguel Ruiz, Norman Maclean, Mark Twain and Wendell Barry. Reverence and gratitude for the natural world, wild things, music and fellow humans, and his family were hallmarks of Ed Morleys life. He loved the lyrics of Pete Seegers song, taken verbatim from the book of Ecclesiastes 3:1, to wit: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. Even his own death took its place in the seasonal reason of creation. Im shedding my earth suit, he would say.

In addition to his beloved Veronica and his dear son, Sam, Ed Morley is survived by brothers, David H. (the late Amy) Morley of Saginaw, Michael (Mary) Morley of Gaylord and Steven (Arden) Morley; niece, Christine (Chris) Black, nephew, Russell (Lucy) Morley, Veronicas daughter, Erica (David) Schultz, and a host of friends and fellow pilgrims who mourn the death of a dear and decent man and give thanks for his life among them.

Funeral services will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford on Saturday, October 19, at 11AM. The Rev. Ric Beattie will officiate. Friends may visit on Friday, October 18, from 4-9PM. Interment and Military Honors will be held at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly on Monday, October 21, at 10AM.
