Obituary for Eileen Margaret Foley

Eileen Margaret (nee McKiernan) Foley, a longtime resident of South Lyon, died on April 11th, 2021. She was 92 years old.

Born on the 27th of April, 1928, Eileen was the fourth child born to Lucy Clare Burns and John T. McKiernan on the McKiernan family dairy farm in Richmond MI. She attended St. Augustine’s in Richmond MI, graduated from Marygrove College (Detroit, MI) and attended Michigan State University (MSU) for her Masters degree. After graduating from Marygrove she began her teaching career in Ubly schools, eventually teaching high school in the South Lyon and Northville school systems. Eileen married Raymond Foley in Richmond in June, 1953. They first lived in Grosse Pointe, MI and then South Lyon MI. Once settled in South Lyon, they were one of the earliest families to join St. Joseph Catholic Church. They went on to raise three daughters and six sons.

Eileen was a devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother to her nine children, their spouses, thirty grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was a treasured aunt to her many nieces and nephews. In addition to being a world-class wife, mother and grandmother, she was a teacher beloved by her students, and a realtor who was exceptional in helping people find the perfect home. She enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they competed in sports—and having her in the stands on your team was a great advantage. Though her talents included acting onstage in her youth, sewing and fashion design, as well as baking exceptional chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon rolls and pumpkin pies, her truest gift was the abundance of love by which everything she did or made or touched was permanently blessed.

A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Joseph Parish for sixty-five years, serving on the Altar Society, Parish Council and other outreach programs. She learned to make a prayer of everything: Christmas dinners, family picnics, heart-breaks, homemaking, love and grief. She was steadfast in her perseverance, cheerful good humored, patient and hopefulness—a true role model for friends and family alike.

Eileen was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Ignatius Foley, her brother Jim, sister Marie and grandson Noah.

She is survived by her sons and daughters, Leo (Barbara), Nora (Robert Ayuso), Raymond (Terri), Kenneth (Josephine), Margaret (Thomas Kokoszka), Dominic (Stacey), Lawrence (Julie), Patrick (Dorothy), and Eileen (Craig Reickert). Her beloved grandchildren are Leo (Leah), Lucy (Christopher), Joseph (Christine), Matthew (Grace), Kenneth (Gretchen), Daniel (Rachel), Rob, Nicholas (Maggie), Emily, Raymond (Brittany), Courtney (Greg Potter), Tyler (Lauren), Ryan, Christine, Dominique, the late Noah, Brenden (Likang), Gabriel, Erin, Benjamin, Christopher, Elizabeth, Mitchell, Shane, Connor, Lauren, Brigit, Pearce, Aidan, and Evan. Her great-grandchildren are James, Alice, Jackson, Caela, Jocelyn, Liam, Joseph, Willa, Jack, Angela and at least two on the way. She is the beloved sister to the late James McKiernan, the late Marie (George Gonczar), Virginia (the late Robert Foley) Foley, Winifred Doane, John T. (Barbara) McKiernan, Don P. (Patricia) McKiernan, Ronald J. (Nancy) McKiernan.

Her large and loving family joins a host of dear friends in mourning the death of an exemplary woman while giving thanks to God for the gift of her life amongst them.
