Obituary for Elizabeth Frances Piper-Gorton

Elizabeth Frances Miller was born on July 24th, 1923 to Edward and Mae Miller in Walled Lake, MI. she was the youngest of four daughters, her sisters being Marie, Jeanne and Virginia. She attended St. Bridget Catholic School on the west side of Detroit, and then went on to graduate from McKenzie High School with an emphasis on business studies. After graduation from high school she began working in the payroll department at J. L. Hudson in downtown Detroit. Soon after, she met the handsome manager of a Woolworth store Richard Piper affectionately known as Dick. They began dating, fell in love, then Richard joined the Navy during World War II. After the war ended, they were married.
They lived on the west side of Detroit where they raised their five children Richard, William, Sandra, Cherie and Lawrence. In 1975 after almost 30 years of marriage, Frans first love Richard died of cancer. For the following 10 years after her husbands death, Fran worked first for Forms Industry, and then at Sinai Hospitals Payroll Department while she raised her youngest son, and last child, Larry. In 1985 Fran married Jack Gorton. Together they traveled Europe and all over the United States, visiting family, friends, and many historical places, while calling Fenton, MI home. In Fenton, they enjoyed a full social life, attending St. Johns Catholic Church where they both sang in the choir, chaired the hospitality room at Applefest, and where Fran laundered altar linens and vestments. Frans main focus was her 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She welcomed and loved Jacks family of six children John, Patty-Ann, Rick, Timothy, Christopher, and Jennifer, with their spouses and loved his and her 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Fran and Jack would have been married 25 years in 2010.
Fran passed away in the care of her family with the support of Hospice at her home.
Frans love and infectious smile touched all who met her. Frans great gift of faith will continue to inspire us and we will forever ache with the absence of her presence.
