Obituary for Ellis Donald "Al" Driller

Ellis Donald Al Driller, a former resident of Redford and Tawas, died on December 14, 2008. He was 86 years old.
Born on October 10, 1922 in Wheeling, West Virginia, one of seven children of Howard Fredrick and Clara Rebecca (Seebright) Driller, Al would grow up in Detroit where his family moved when he was young. He attended Pershing High School and then enlisted in the Army Air Corps where he served as an airplane mechanic. While in the service, Al volunteered to go to Korea and was sent to Okinawa June 30, 1945. 1st Sergeant Driller would serve overseas for seven months, and after being wounded, was awarded a Purple Heart. Upon returning from war he began working with BF Goodrich, then opened his own tire store at 8 mile and Schoenerr. He later operated the Standard Oil Gas Station at 6 & Kinlock and proudly ran a real gas station with full service and a pleasant, trustworthy atmosphere the kind of place people came to just to talk. He would go on to work for Massey-Ferguson from which he retired in the late seventies.
In retirement, Al absolutely LOVED Florida; spending six months every year as a snowbird and living in Tawas the other half of the year. He would stop and visit his children on the trips down to Florida and once there, enjoyed his job as Security Guard and calling for Bingo at the park where he lived. Al was always busy, known to be a go-getter and very social. He was a stylish dresser, took great care with his appearance and loved to dance and be the life of the party. Everybody liked him, not just for his enthusiasm and charm but for his generous heart and willingness to help anybody he could. His warm smile and easy laugh will missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Margaret (Denkhaus) Driller in 2004, and is survived by his children, Donna J. (Lawrence E.) Brown of Milford, James E. (Sandra) Driller of TN, Nancy S. (John) Verbison of Brighton, Dave E. (Rae Ann) Driller of TN, twelve grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, a sister, Beverly Collins and many dear friends.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Thursday, December 18, at 11AM. Cremation will follow. Friends may visit Wednesday 2-9PM. Memorials are encouraged to the Veterans Health Administration. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
