Obituary for Emily Ruth Tims

Emily Ruth Tims, of Berkley Michigan, died peacefully while in hospice at her parent’s home on July 25, 2021. She was 50 years old.

Born on April 21, 1971, in Cleveland Ohio, she was the oldest child of Norma (Bagley) and John Stephen Tims II. The family moved to Wyandotte Michigan, when she was two years old, where she lived until she was in the third grade. They then moved to Canton, where she attended Gallimore Elementary, West Middle and graduated from Canton High School in 1989. She attended Michigan State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts (dual major) in Studio Art and English with an education minor in 1994. She earned a Master of Arts in Educational Administration at Michigan State University in 2002.

She started her career in education as a long-term substitute in Secondary Art. For the next four years, she taught Art, writing, and technology at Cranbrook Kingswood boy’s middle school. She then taught elementary art for one year at Salem Elementary in South Lyon, before joining the staff at Lake Shore Public Schools, where she taught for twenty-one years. She taught Advanced art, drawing and design, visual arts and English 9 and 11 at Lake Shore High School. She was also the yearbook advisor for eleven years. In 2012, she moved to Rodgers, Masonic, and Violet Elementaries, where she taught art to grades k-5, revamping the elementary art curriculum.

She was active in the Lake Shore Federation of Teachers, as a building representative for three years, then as Union president. She was selected Teacher of the Year by her peers in 2010 and again in 2019/2020. She served on multiple local, Intermediate School District and State Level education committees and work groups. She acted as a facilitator, trainer, and presenter of staff development on multiple topics. Throughout her career, she exhibited a genuine caring for others and was committed to making children’s lives better. She frequently went above and beyond to make sure students had warm coats, boots, and essentials. She made sure that Santa visited the lockers of Children whose homes she knew he would not visit. She never missed an opportunity to mentor a student or a colleague. She was dedicated to expanding experiences for the children she taught, played classical music in her classroom, incorporated literacy her art lessons, and made art fun with creative experiences, interesting props, and memorable content.

She loved both making and wearing jewelry, made an interesting statement with her wardrobe choices, adored shoes and hats of all kinds. She dabbled in knitting baby sweaters and toys and sewing stuffed animals. She loved, voraciously read and collected books. She enjoyed visiting new restaurants, traveling, and shopping with family and friends.

She is survived by her parents, Stephen and Norma Tims; siblings, Stephen David (Sarah) Tims, Donald John (Melanie) Tims, and Meredith Anne Tims; nephews, Joseph R., John W., Everette B., and Zachary W.; niece, Eloise H.; also extended family and many dear friends.
