Emma Besancon, a long time resident of Milford, and devoted member of the Milford United Methodist Church, died in the care of her family on June 25, 2010, at the age of ninety-four.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Besancon,(d. 1974) and her son, Doug Besancon (d.2008). Born in Summerfield, Ohio on the 4th of July in 1915, Emma was the daughter of John Fred and Matilda (Mercer) Stephen. After graduating from high-school, she moved to Michigan and attended beauty school in Detroit and then opened a beauty shop in Walled Lake. On March 18, 1940 she married Ralph Besancon and they lived on Canal Street in Milford where they operated Milford Hardware on the corner of Main and Center Streets from 1939 until the mid 1970's. Emma was a devout member of Milford United Methodist Church for nearly seventy years. She taught Sunday School, cooked for funeral luncheons, harvest dinners, pot lucks and bake sales; she was part of the Martha Mary Circle and lived her faith with quiet devotion and inspiring courage, accepting God's gifts and life's many challenges with the same quiet, gentle, generous spirit that made her dear to everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue (Wilson) Combs of Highland, daughter-in-law, Mary Besancon, and grandchildren, Ralph (Julie) Muelling, Jill (Jeff) Savitsky, Stephen (Karla) Combs, Michael, Katherine, and Robert Besancon; great grandsons, Matthew and Andrew Combs, and many dear friends who join with her family in mourning the death of a dear woman and giving thanks to God for her long and loving life among them.
