Obituary for Erwin C. Zarnowski

Erwin C. Zarnowski, a long-time resident of Highland Township, died on Friday, October 3rd, 2014, surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old. Born on December 12, 1929, the son of Chester and Elizabeth Zarnowski and brother of Evelyn and Dorothy, Erwin grew up in Hamtramck where he attended Our Lady Queen of Apostles Elementary School then went onto Pershing High School. On August 12th, 1950, he married the love of his life, Rita Nowocinski. Erwin was drafted into the Army in September 1951 and served in the Korean War where he earned a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars. He was honorably discharged in 1953. They made their home in Detroit, where they were blessed with the birth of a daughter, Debra. In 1971, Erwin built a house for his family in Highland Township. His family continued to grow over the years to include James (son-in-law), Kimberly and Heather (granddaughters), David (grandson-in-law) and Matthew (great-grandson).
To provide for this family, Erwin worked as a welder at Dodge Main in 1948. Once he returned from the Army he continued to work at Dodge until he retired in 1979. Erwin began working for the Oakland Press at a Motor Route Carrier in 1989. He continued to deliver newspapers until 1999 and earned the award of Carrier of the Year. His family was so proud of all of his accomplishments.
Erwin was a very handy man and spent most of his days fiddling on cars in the garage or fixing broken items for his family and friends. He loved McDonalds and never said no when offered a dessert or candy. Erwin looked forward to deer-hunting season and taught himself to play the accordion. He also enjoyed living on the lake and hosted numerous holiday parties at his house. Erwin always took his family for rides on his pontoon boat and built a paddle boat for everyone to enjoy. If you couldnt find Erwin at his house or on the water, he was normally at the Church of the Holy Spirit either ushering or taking part in church activities. Erwin and Rita had a great devotion to their faith and were founding members of the church.
There are so many memories of Erwin that will remain in our hearts. We will always remember his immense kindness, resounding generosity, and endless bravery. Even though he is no longer with us, we have faith he is looking down on us from heaven wearing his Korean Veteran hat with a big smile on his face.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 3700 N. Harvey Lake Road, Highland on Wednesday, October 8 at 10 AM. Burial All Saints Cemetery, Waterford. Friends may visit at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford on Tuesday 3-9 PM, Rosary 7 PM. For further information please call 248-684-6645.
