Obituary for Evelyn D. Cohea

Evelyn Delores Cohea was born on July 18, 1933 at home in Dearborn, Michigan, the middle child of three daughters born to Otto F. and Julia A. (nee. Smith) Harhold. Evelyn grew up in Dearborn with her sisters, Phyllis and Dorothy, and graduated from Fordson High School. Following high school she worked as a secretary for the government at OTAC which led to her joining the Women’s Air Force Reserve. She was a W.A.F. She later attended Wayne State University and earned her Master’s Degree from University of Michigan.

Evelyn met the young Lawerence Cohea in high school and after a loving courtship, they married on November 30, 1957 at Mt. Olivet Methodist Church in Dearborn. They were blessed with the births of their two children, Larry and Julia. Evelyn and Larry made their first home on Dudley Street in Dearborn Heights and later moved to Lake Sherwood, where they hosted many parties and gatherings, creating lasting memories with family and friends. Evelyn was always the life of the party, making sure everyone was having fun and often decked out in her mardi gras beads or playing the kazoo. She loved to entertain, was always having fun through her entire life. Evelyn and her sister, Dorothy ,were avid theater and opera goers for thirty years. She loved outdoor adventures, traveling, hot air balloon rides, archery, horses, waterskiing, snow skiing, riding snow mobiles and swimming. She was still swimming twice a week until last year.

Evelyn was most passionate about her family, her church, and her work. She was a lifelong dedicated member of the Milford United Methodist Church and was a beloved and prominent elementary and junior high science teacher in the Milford area. In addition to teaching, she also was active in the gifted programs, she hosted three exchange students, and started subbing after retirement. Her son, Larry, died of Leukemia at a young age and she began visiting homebound students as a way of giving back to the community.

Despite life’s hardships, Evelyn possessed a joyous heart and love of life. She was ever determined, mischievous and generous. She will be missed by many, but most of all by her beloved granddaughters, Evelyn-Rose and Lauren; her sisters, Phyllis (the late Robert) Glentz and Dorothy (the late Dario) Tomei and their children; Karin (Rick) Guinan, Kathie Maifert, Lynda (Lee) Howder, Lisa (Chris) Schmidt, Laura Bergeron, Dino (Patrice) Tomei and Christopher (Denise) Tomei; her cousin, Pat (Ken) Loy and their daughter, Karen (Lance) Rossetto, as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
