Obituary for Gail Sue Fiedler

Gail Fiedler, a lifelong resident of Highland Twp., died on on Friday, May 25, 2018, surrounded by her family, after challenges from congestive heart failure.

Born in Flint, on May 7, 1952, she was the daughter of The Rev. Maynard D. and Laura Aileen (Chick) Richards. Her father was a Nazarene clergyman and, as the daughter of the manse, she moved with her family from community to community as her father’s ministry took them.  In each new town and church Gail made friends readily, making the love of God and her deep faith the ties that bind family and friends and neighbors into a loving community. It was in Nazarene church camp, in 1967, she met Dan Fiedler.  He was 17 and she was 15; she lived in Ortonville, he lived in Highland. They were each fairly smitten with the other.  On those rare occasions he got the use of the family car, Dan would make the drive to take her on a date.  They kept hoping and praying for ways to shorten the distance that kept them apart. The Lord works in wonderful ways and in the fullness of time, Gail’s father was called as Assistant Pastor to the Church of the Nazarene in Howell and their courtship took up in earnest. They were married in the Howell church on April 15, 1972, and they settled in Highland and began their lives together.

Gail loved Michigan’s water wonderland, the lakes and beaches never far away, the lighthouses and state parks, boat cruises and camping with the growing family through endless summers in the 80’s and 90’s as her children were growing up.  She loved romance novels, especially with cowboys in the plots and worked for more than twenty years at St. Joseph Hospital’s Woodland Clinic where she was a registration clerk.  She was a fan of MSU football and dressed in bright colors as a sign of her heart’s gladness. Gail liked sharing her strong faith and love of God in the way she opened her heart and family to her fellow children of God -- neighbors and strangers alike.

Most of all, Gail was passionate about her family. She was always cooking for kids or grandkids or the swarm of friends who were attracted to her good company and loving kitchen. She cherished spending time with her grandchildren — Grandma Gail enjoyed visiting, helping around the house, gifting the kids with candy and sweets and was their biggest fan at sporting events. Gail will be remembered fondly for her love of life, her fierce love and devotion to her family and her church and her infectious, distinct laughter that could light up a room. She was a loving wife, mom and confidante to her kids and the friends of her kids, a devoted grandmother and trusted friend, having learned as a girl that church is a community of people who share God’s love, not just brick and mortar.

Preceded in death by her parents, Gail is survived by her family and a large circle of friends who were made to feel like family.  In addition to Dan, her loving husband of 46 years, Gail is survived by their children, Joe (LeAnne Dunn) Fiedler, Nick (Lindsey) Fiedler, and Erika Docusen; grandchildren, Lily, Luke, Paige, Wyatt, Finn and Harper; sister, Julie (Steve) Tayes; brother, Bud (Dotty) Richards; brother-in-law, Rick (Kathy) Fiedler, sisters-in-law, Luann (Dave) Cape and Marlys (Bob) Drebenstedt; father-in-law, Mark (Milly) Fiedler; nieces and nephews, Zach, Isaac, Charles, Kathryn, Brent, Jane, Rob, Annie, Katie, Troy, Danaé and Reagan.
