Obituary for Gary Childs

Gary C. Childs, a resident of Linden and former resident of Milford, passed away in the care of his family at Genesys Hospice in Goodrich on December 27, 2008. He was 70 years old. Born on November 18, 1938 in Petoskey, Michigan, the son of Clayton Samuel and Clara Henrietta (Krieg) Childs, Gary grew up in Milford, on Rowe Lake, and attended Milford High School. He went to work at LaVoy's Gulf Gas Station at the corner of Liberty and Main Street where he learned cars inside and out. He worked for years as a mechanic with the General Motors Proving Grounds where he lived and died for the annual Chevy Ribbon. He drove wrecker and did mechanic work part time for Bud Wakefield's Sunoco Service on the South Side and served on the Milford Volunteer Fire Department for years.
Gary Childs loved his family more than anything. More than a father and grandfather, to his children and grandchildren he was a true friend. He liked chauffeuring his grandkids to school and to various events, sharing his love of cars and model cars with them, and being a part of their daily lives. They all knew they could call on him for support in good times and bad. If his family was happy, Gary was happy. He liked listening to his police scanner, watching T.V. helping family and friends in need. Among his many blessings was living long enough to hold his second great-grandchild in his arms just a month ago.
He is survived by his children, Carol (Herb) Butterfield of Fenton, Dennis (Laura) Childs of Linden, Diana (Michael) Dasher of Fenton, Doug (Liz) Childs of Fowlerville; grandchildren, Nicole (Jason) Eldred, Lisa (Warren) Hunt, Joseph and Jessica Childs, Trisha, Tylor, and Trey Dasher, Megan and Sarah Childs; great grandchildren, Anna Eldred and Aedan Hunt. Also surviving are his sisters, Joyce (James) Wilson, Linda (Ernie) Miller, many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Childs in 2004.

A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty, Milford, on Wednesday, December 31st, at 11AM, with the Rev. Dr. John Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Milford Memorial Cemetery. Friends may visit Tuesday 5-9PM. Memorials are encouraged in his name to Genesys Hospice. For further information please phone 248-684-6645.
