Obituary for Gary L. Goodenow

Gary L. Goodenow, a resident of Brighton and former long time resident of Milford, died on November 25, 2018 at the age of 76.

Gary was born on June 13, 1942 in Logansport, Indiana, the son of Wilbur and Mildred Umbaugh Goodenow, and grew up in Lima, Ohio. He was a graduate of the General Motors Institue of Technology and enjoyed working in emissions and as the Director of Tire Wheel Systems at the General Motors Proving Ground in Milford for over thirty-six years. In “retirement” he enjoyed operating his own remodeling company, G Squared Services.

He married the love of his life, Shari Baetcke, on March 12, 1966 in St. Paul’s Church in Brighton and they made their home in Milford where they raised their sons, Jeff and Daniel. Gary and Shari also were blessed with the opportunity to be a host home for eleven foreign exchange students over the years, relationships that they share to this day. Gary and Shari loved to take tours in their Corvette, travel, and enjoyed trips all over the United States and throughout Europe.

Gary taught his kids and grandkids the joys of hunting, fishing, and the beauty and splendor of the out-of-doors with trips to national parks and vacations to his cabin on the Rifle River in Omer, Michigan. “Opa” will be dearly missed.

Gary was preceded in death by Shari, his beloved wife of over fifty-two years, on October 18th of this year, and a son, Daniel P. Goodenow in 2016. He is survived by his son, Jeff (Joy) Goodenow; his daughter-in-law, Kathy Goodenow; grandchildren, Nico, Justin, Amanda and Alyssa Goodenow; brother, Dennis (Kathy) Goodenow; sister, Peg Lemaux; in-laws, Lura (John) Tincu, Ann (Gary) Foster, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Brighton, 400 E. Grand River Ave., Brighton, on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at 11AM. A luncheon will follow at the Livingston County Wildlife & Conservation Club, 6060 East M-36, Whitmore Lake, Michigan, at 12:30PM.
