GRIEF & HEALING
affirmations to uplift & help you through
each stage of the grieving process.
Gary Lars Henriksen, a resident of Highland Township, Michigan, died at his home in the care of his family on April 10, 2016. He was seventy-two years old.
Born on April 11, 1943, the son of Lars and Ellen (Nielsen) Henriksen, Gary grew up in Birmingham where he was a graduate of Birmingham High School. After high school he attended Ferris State University in Big Rapids where he obtained a business degree.
Shortly after graduation in 1967, Gary was drafted to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. When he returned from war, he met Mary Buckman. They quickly fell in love and married on July 14, 1973 in Livonia, Michigan. Together they have two children, Zachary and Nicole.
He joined the family business, Hendersen Landscaping in Troy, and worked along side his father and brother. After his father passed, and later, following his brother’s retirement, Gary operated Adams Maple Mobil in Birmingham.
Gary was always on the go and had a love for all things that moved fast. He rode motorcycles, snowmobiles, and obtained his pilot’s license so he could enjoy flying. He also loved to be on the water and enjoyed opportunities to sail, something he learned at a very young age. Wherever he went he had his family with him, and he and Mary had a lot of fun.
Gary knew how to make people laugh. He could be crazy, or funny, or deliver his humor at the end of a long story, during which you weren’t sure if he was being serious or not. His passion, his personality, and his patriotism will be dearly missed by all.
In addition to Mary, his beloved wife of over forty-three years, he is survived by his son, Zachary Henriksen and his wife, Becky; his daughter, Nicole Henriksen; sister, Lillian (the late Frank) Hart; brother-in-law, Len Buckman and his wife Anne; sister-in-law, Barbara Henriksen, and many dear nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lars and Ellen Henriksen and his brother, Norm Henriksen.
Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 E. Liberty St., Milford, on Thursday, April 14, from 4-8PM. A Funeral Service will be held at Cornerstone Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 9455 Hilton Rd., in Brighton, on Friday, April 15, at 11AM with the Rev. Dr. Richard Alberta officiating. Cremation will follow with interment in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
Memorials may be made in his name to Smile Train or Angela Hospice.
